It sounds more intimidating than it is. Dropping the engine is actually pretty easy. Your first time estimate about 4 hours to take your time and being really careful. This is doing it alone. I have done it now 3 times. Now, depending on if I remember to drain the oil first it'll take about 1 to 2 hours out. I think that last time was an hour. This is leaving the tranny on. I haven't done it without taking out the tranny.

I should mention I have a lift that is very slow but easy to work with.

Do yourself a favor, avoid short cuts. If you think you might be able to get away with not removing something think again, there are no good short cuts. I haved tried to talk myself into thinking I can drop it without removing the exhaust and am just kidding myself. I also have to remove the engine tins as it is a tight fit between my rails.

BTW; I always like to budget a little more than twice removal time to do the install. It takes far longer to add 10 qts of oil, than to drain 10 quarts! It also takes longer to adjust the clutch than to disconnect the cable. Longer to use a torque wrench to tighten fasteners, than an impact wrench to loosen them. And I include cleaning all fasteners, and tools used for removal, as install time.

Yes, you have to completely remove it. If you only want to lower the engine a few inches, you can get away with only removing the 4 bolts and let it hang. If you are removing the engine, you would need to remove the cotter pin and yank this out.

So when you guys want to time removing an engine on a calendar instead of a stop watch, Try something like a 996 or 997 Tiptronic Turbo w/4wd. That's when beer celebration really tastes sweet.

My friend's lift 1 Hr to remove, 2 Hr to install. many hours to do the complete service

You guys are talking about an hour maybe two and I'm about to do this for the first time and nervous as hell about doing it.

Make a check list and there are checklist on the forum as well in the 101 projects book. Take your time and allow about 4 hrs start to finish. You'll be done before you know it.

Would anyone recommend putting the engine back in without the fan and carb's etc. to save having to lift the car so high, or will it be too hard to install all the ancillaries once the engine is in?
