ECU chip advice?
Si I have been researching chips for my 88' 3.2 and I was wondering if anybody is using or has any knowledge of "Racing Pro's" chips that are sold on e-bay??? Your knowledge/opinion is greatly appreciated!

Steve Wong. 911Chips.com. A $50 chip is like getting back-alley brain surgery.

The physical chip is the same (the hardware)...but the programming inside the chip is the difference between great and you got ripped!
Because any chip can be programmed...the seller can claim any facts he wants....so that when you complain that you received a bad chip...or one that does worse than your factory one...you have no leg to stand on. Stay with quality....a $50 chip from the guy in the alley with the long raincoat will give you exactly what you deserve! Bob

I would say their is a very high chance that $50 chip is an exact copy of a Steve Wong chip. That said, it isn't a gamble that is worth the cost. That $400 saved could cost you an engine.

That pretty much sums it up. Steve Wong all the way.

You need to take your car on a dyno and watch your AFR ratios through the entire rpm range ...
You'll immediately see the difference between a good chip and a piece of crap ... Why spend $50.00 dollars on an engine worth 10K ??? Cheers Phil

Read the label on the back, I look for ranch flavoring, but many will seek BBQ.

My problem would be...perhaps some amateur programmer is playing with ECU chips to see if he can improve things.
But...he is using your engine to test it!! The raw unprogrammed chip is worth about $4 or so. If he doesn't know what he's doing...the chip maybe OK up to certain RPMs or whatever...then suddenly go extremele lean (and burn all the pistons and valves). Therein lies the big problem....one digit or bit in the wrong place or with the wrong value can destroy an engine. I have seen experimental programs with ignition curves so far out of whack that it defys the imagination! The one that always springs to mind is the one that forced the ignition into -35 deg retard at 8000 RPM...I think the programmer meant to go positive...but made a tiny little error. Bob

I had good results with Steve Wong...he spent time to discuss the options and then combined his chip with a bypass pipe from M&K. I got more than he advertised with his customized chip the engine produced 250 HP...he was able to improve the air/fuel ratio and really fine tune the result. Easy to follow instructions and great results.

You put it in a PROM/EPROM/EEPROM reader and have it 'read' the contents of the chip into a 8k binary file. Then, you do the same with a chip you wish to compare it to. Then, you can use DOS and type fc (filecompare) /b (binary) image1.bin image2.bin. Any differences are listed.
And yes, it's highly likely it's a copy of SW or another chip (or even a stock chip!). In a case like this, I would never rip off the work of another person, I'd pay them for their work and buy it thru them. Chuck.H '89 TurboLookTarga, 361k miles |

Agreed. Steve spent some time with me over the phone to make sure I was getting exactly what I needed. He is very knowledgeable. I have no idea who "Racing Pro" is but I would not waste my money and risk my car over a gamble with their chip.
