Engine and transmission mating
I inadvertently posted this in the engine rebuilding forum. In this forum is probably more appropriate.
I'm at the point where I'm ready to put the drivetrain back in my 85 Carrera. I have the transmission and engine sitting on separate pallets. I have already installed the exhaust system on the motor, but from the look of it, it would appear that the crossover pipe will get in the way of the clutch arm if I try and mate the transmission to the engine. Is this an optical illusion? Does the exhaust have to be off the motor to install the transmission? Thanks in advance...

My 87 has the G50 instead of the 915, but I don't think they differ in this regard. I mated my trans to the engine with the exhaust in place. Here's the spot in my project thread where I did so - the pictures might help you out.

You should be able to mate the engine to tranny with the exhaust in place. I just did this with a '84 engine and tranny. It took some careful jockeying to get everything to mate properly, but it did.

If it is a problem, you can just remove the cross over pipe and install it later. The G50 tranny does not have a clutch arm protruding at the bottom so it does not have the same issue.

...or remove the clutch arm. I believe that is held on with a circlip. Now that I think about it, I don't think I had the clutch arm on the tranny when I mated it to the engine. I think I just attached the arm after the engine/tranny were back in the car.

It's also a good change to clean up/derust/grease the whole exposed assembly under there.
