Problem with reverse

The gearbox on my 930 has for some time been difficult on the reverse shift. Now it is almost impossible to get in reverse. It feels like the shifter is hitting something solid, and it will just not move into gear. Maybe its imagination, but it shifts better when warm.

The car is an '80 with 60K miles.

Any ideas will be greately appreciated.

Hello, I would first try to adjust, there is a good tech article here that tells you how to tweak things up a bit, inspect for any worn or binding parts within the shift linkage.

check the simple things first if you can't resolve this by adjusting or replacing a few bushings, then look into clutch/ cable/ synros etc....

good luck, Peter

my sc was very difficult to shift into rever as well, a mechanic recommended i shift into 2nd then go to reverse. it worked great. that is assuming that you bushings and ajustment are good.

I fixed it. It was not at all as serious as I thought at first.

I opened the access panel behind the front seats to see if it was possible to adjust the coupling. It turned out to be a loose set screw in the shift rod coupling.

Now its smooth as a knife through warm butter.
Thanks for input.
