Flamer pattern?

Okay, call me paranoid. But lately there seems to be a pattern developing. A new poster shows, makes a few posts...then picks a fight, especially after being told his "technical expert opinion" is junk science. Then another new poster shows, same scene. So, are we dealing with a lot of bozos? Or just one...who can't come up with a fresh act?

No kidding! There a post a while ago saying how great this BBS is and lots of praise followed.

Since then there have been several antagonistic posts looking ( I think ) to just start something. I'm sure the seniors around here are doing what I do which is look past them and get on with the real purpose.

Sharing Porsche knowledge and interests.

I don't post a lot but that's mainly because I spend most of my time searching past threads and learning about my car. There was the post with Oscope images the other day that was awesome!

This is a great place and some may want to try and make it less great. To them I say......(distracted) Hey, was that a post about vacuum adv., or wheel clearance..etc

Ron, this a bit off topic, but thought you'd appreciate a chuckle. Your "bedroom science" line reminded me... This morning's paper had an article on a sex enhancement drug being developed for women...supposedly to enhance desire for sex. Cindy: "Does that mean both of us take drugs and then have sex? Heck, we did that decades ago...." "Orgy Porgy, Ford and fun..."

Paul ... to your original question ...

There is one pattern that is very clear, and it has several juvenile aspects characteristic of immaturity:

1. No interest in learning the troubleshooting 'process' ... or any comprehensive 'systems' knowlege ... much too easy to get answers from others ... generally missing pertinent data in initial post!

2. Failure to understand that troubleshooting over the Internet, just as over the telephone, is an interactive, iterative process ... and that is NOT just a one-way Q & A flow of information to the person posing the initial question!

3. Impatience ... they want an instantaneous answer ... which single component change will fix their problem , and refuse to do any checking or provide additional data to further clarify an incomplete initial description of the problem ...

4. Failure to understand a very simple concept ... that sugestions about things to check are NOT pronouncements that if you do this ... it will positively, instantly FIX your problem ...

5. A 'fixation' with finding the 'magic bullet' fix ... when, in the real world, no such thing exists, or ever will! Probably related to personal beliefs that life is really as simple as is is on TV or in the movies ... anything can be fixed in 30 minutes or an hour! LOL!

6. A willingness to replace components without evidence that there is any need to ... closely related to, and the result of item (attitude) #1 above! Just call it the 'hope and pray' method of auto repair! Shotgunning at its' worst! Not willing to explain why specific components were replaced!

7. Lack of motivation to read and study manuals on their own ... and actually trying to learn something about their car on their own! Also characterized by the 'Why isn't there a technical article about every single procedure that can be done to a 911?' Laziness???

Did I leave anything out?

Careful with the "laziness" factor. I'm putting in 12 hr. days, 7 days a week. It's easier to hop on to the BBS and post a question than try to find it in a book.

Greg,

Paul wasn't talking about newbies in general, and neither was I! He was referring to two very specific cases in the last two weeks where the individual essentially 'went off the deep end' with name-calling, ranting and raving about things that made little sense, physical threats that never happened, etc. In general, the response so far has been to laugh it off, and not give it much concern. But, there was an irrational aspect to the ranting, and I suspect that is why Paul was wondering if it was the same person returning under a new ID.

well since the moderators can check IP addresses, it is easy to tell if it is the same person with a different handle, although they could be using different access points, or if they're really good, spoofing.

"Did I leave anything out?"

I must confess I have a BBS disease which sometimes causes me to be flamed...and I can't necessarily blame the flamers...call it "McGyverism" - the tendency to speculate endlessly about extremely ill-advised "mods" and DIY "projects" - most of which will either destroy the car or (at best) make it go slower.

For instance: Hey, what would it take to install a 944 transaxle backwards in a 911, attach it via a custom fabricated LSD to the existing 915 transaxle and thereby create a DIY all wheel drive system?

Okay, just kidding on that one - but you get the idea. While these sorts of posts are infinitely interesting to those who share the disease, I find that some of the Pelican-heads who actually live in the REAL WORLD get pretty annoyed. I wonder if Wayne would be willing to start up a new BBS called something like "Insane and Unlikely DIY Projects Proposed By People Who Have No Idea What The F$#&ck They Are Talking About But Are Willing To Damage Their Cars Anyway"? I'll volunteer right now to be the moderator. Wayne?

Oh yeah, on a serious note...

"It's easier to hop on to the BBS and post a question than try to find it in a book"

I not only agree, but I have the books and I find that 95% of the replies I get here are better than the books...

Nope; most ISPs use DHCP, giving you a different IP each time you sign in, from a pool of hundreds, if not thousands of potential addresses. Or they may be behind a proxy server.

This Board does not miss a beat. I'm constantly amazed. I can't find the link, but one day Leland logged in under an assumed name and started a thread. I think it was MINUTES later that the ruse was smelled out, the real identity was uncovered and tghe jig was up.

On another occasion, someone was pretending to be an ordinary poster when in fact he/she was a company representative gently suggesting use of a particular product. That rat was also INSTANTLY smelled out.

I like to think of myself as a smart guy, and although I resist like crazy any temptations to feel superior, I have to confess that few of my professional associations provide me with an exciting level of thought stimulation. If you know what I mean. But just as I can feel the sun's warmth, I can sense the energy on this Board. Mental energy. I sure look up to you guys.

Yeah, but their DHCP is distributed from a block, so while the IP might not be exactly the same, it will be similar. Not a smoking gun, but a marginally worthwhile data point that we can use to clog the criminal justice system.

Hoot! Great comments from all. I must confess a minor guilt trip here. You see, I honestly believe, well suspect, that this individual came here after I left another (early 911) posting board in disgust, announcing that this individual's posts were my reason for leaving. Shortly after that, the gay porn pics that some of you may remember appeared here...all of them aimed at me, friends of mine, or respected senior posters who "dissed" (in his mind) this guy's fictional post about engine specs...all the jargon lifted from BA's book. Yep, I detect a pattern...I'm not asking for any computer secrets here...but what I'm hearing is that it will be next to impossible to drive this a-hole to earth, electronically? I'll admit to being computer & internet illiterate...so I'm just hoping there is a way?
