adding wheel speed sensors to early 911
Hi,
Does anyone have experience adding wheel speed sensors to an early 911 for enabling traction control on a modern ECU (e.g. Motec, Pectel)? What parts did you use? Any photos? Thanks in advance... -Steve |

You could have a couple trigger wheels designed and water jet cut to fit on your cv joints. The photo below is just for ideas...I think I would go for no oblong mounting holes in the part, and just use a cv flange as a template.
So in theory, put one on each inner cv joint and that would give you a driven speed and the other would be ground speed. The trans side cover area has the best options for a sensor bracket with the other side being a bit more challenging. The Motec Traction Control Multiplexer needs sensors on four corners. ![]() Last edited by rsscotty; 09-13-2013 at 10:04 PM.. |

This is an idea that I've been contemplating for some time; I've looked here and there, but haven't found the right information.
I'm assuming a speed sensor of this type could also be used to add a 964 style hydraulic spoiler to my '87 targa. Any ideas about that Scott?

This is what I did for speed input for my MXL dash, there is a magnet on the other keeper 180 deg opposite this one. The sensor is mounted on the diff cover on a 901. Granted this only gives two pulse/rev, so it might not provide the resolution for traction control.

It's a fairly complicated process. I bought a generic 60-2 wheel from clewitt, then added material to the missing teeth. My machinist/engine builder then located the teeth and cut it for the missing teeth. The axle flange was machined down to accept the wheel; we also had to turn down a piece of steel tubing(with a lip) to weld to the axle flange to accept the CV boot. He also machined a billet piece with a counter-sunk hole to receive the hall-effect sensor. Does it work? Don't know yet, preparing to start the car in the next couple of weeks. Hop over to the 930 section and check out the build.
