Any CAD guys out there, that have purchased this CAD file and can comment on the quality of the data. From the images it looks reasonable.

I think it's a lot of money for what even the seller say that "It is based loosely on the earlier 3.2 liter".

Why would you like to buy it?

Just thinking about a couple of winter design projects, in and around the engine nice to have some surrounding environment cad. I do have access to a FARO arm to capture some data but this file might shorten time involved.

That's a great deal but your looking at the 3d max file rendered not the cad
File.

Tom, I guess it depends on what are you looking to do this model. According to the description the geometry is polygonal. Thus, I assume this means the data is not parametric or boundary rep, and therefore I don't know how accurate it is if you wanted to take measurements. Do you have a seat of the software to modify it or manipulate it? Furthermore, the model looks incomplete, as I'm not seeing any of the pistons or valve train.

It has been quite a few years (10+) since I have work with cad on a daily basis. I have previously use Cadkey, and limited experience with UG, and Ideas. I have access to Solidworks now, to do a few home and P-car projects. I am thinking of buying the dxf file and import it to SW. I don't need the engine internals or the parametric features, dumb solid would do. I can check dimensional accuracy with a FARO arm, if required.

I do like SW's parametric modeling compared to my old Cadkey software. When all else fails, I still have my drafting board

Hi Tom,
I have this file. It is reasonably good. I checked a few critical dimensions and there is a slight error in all of them. For example the cylinder centerline spacing is off by ~1mm, The engine carrier mount holes are off by ~1mm in various dimensions. The DXF file has each of the main components on different layers - so whoever modeled it knew that they were doing.

Hi Tom, the dxf is going to be only a 2D representation of the 3D model. A dxf is vector format (as opposed to raster), so that is better than nothing. But the dxf won't give you the 3D models or the ability to manipulate individual components. Think of the dxf as a drawing that doesn't lose resolution as you zoom in on it. As I said before, I guess it depends on what you're looking to do with the dxf/models.
