What plugs into this on top of the engine?
Getting ready to start tune up and valve adjustment... I was taking off engine tin and cleaning up when I noticed this plug was not connected to anything. What is this and what goes into it? Is it messing things up not being connected?
It's a carburetored 2.2l car. Thanks! ![]() |

Well, it looks like the plug is shoved through the lifting eye to keep it from flailing around. That is not a stock location for anything.
Is there quite a lot of wire leading to this plug bunched up on top of the engine? If so, it might be for the backup light switch, which is on the front of the transmission. You could look at a wiring diagram to see if the wire colors/codes are for that switch. |

Did the car previously have MFI instead of carbs?
Looks like the plug for the airbox sensor/speed switch based on the red/white wire that is visible. Reverse switch wires should be green/yellow and Grey/something.... Perhaps Porsche only made one harness for both carb and MFI harnesses back then, like they did for later years with extra plugs not needed for a certain application, but still there...

Can you tell what color the wire is?
Could be pressure or temp considering the location on the harness

Looks like red and yellow wires. The harness starts with the rectangular block at the ignition stuff on the left side then goes to the middle of the engine top... one line splits off into the plastic cover to possibly the alternator, next this one that splits off with the red and yellow to the rubber boot shoved in the lifting eyelet, the harness continues with a split to the oil sender? then the harness continues forward into the firewall.

Here is the connector on my 70T it has a red and yellow wire in it. I think this is for the temp warning light.

Its the thermo/time switch, normally screwed in to the crankcase breather cover , where yours just has a the screwed-in 17mm atf plug. There was kind of an elaborate cold starting/emissions arrangement on the 2.2T zeniths. Probably very few of them that still work correctly. I'd hazard a guess that someone removed all that stuff from yours. The thermo/time switch is probably not the only thing missing now. To have it all complete there is a micro-switch at the rear of the left carb, an rpm transducer/relay on the electrical panel, a solenoid in the left carb body, a solenoid at the front of the left carb, and small fuel rails inside the air cleaner housing. The same switch was used on MFI/CIS cars too, though the CIS cars had it screwed into the left chain cover.

Daves911L nailed it. I removed all that emissions crap many, many years ago. I left the plug you show attached only for a tidy look. Doesn't do anything.
