For the Fellow Brake Nerds......

Chrysler tech friend (StefanS on here) sent me these pictures. It's a rear rotor from a newish Dodge Charger sedan that came in for service. What's wrong with these pictures, or better yet, the person who owns the car?!

When he said the rotor was as thin as a record (we're sorta old and actually know what a vinyl record is........ ), I thought he was exaggerating. NOPE!!! Shame on me for questioning his description.

Dodge Charger sedans aren't that old- 2006 is the newest.

Kinda thought it was OT-worthy but since this is a technical forum and brake stuff comes up here quite frequently, I figured the fellow brake nerds like me would get a kick out of it.

Well, maybe not. I look at the brakes on every car a couple of times a year during oil changes, then again when I change the wheels and tires from winter/summer or summer/winter, and I know just from looking when they'll need to be changed out, and which components will need changing. "Just pads this time" or "pads and rotors this time" or "hey, those hoses are getting to be a little old - time to refresh."

But that's just me.

In the past I have converted many 6 or small V8 cars into fire breathing monsters...LOL
But...in every case...I insisted that the owner bring the brakes up to snuff so that the car could stop as fast as it could go!
Any owner that just wanted a big engine...but no brakes...they got sent down the road to some other shop (probably with no concience) ... I would not contribute to the death toll.
It still amazes me as to how many drivers spend thousands on engines and until the front of the car meets something hard...never think about the brakes.

Makes me wonder what kind of wheels the car had..? I have heard that those giant wheels that are popular with urban teens/gangster wannabee's are hard on brakes but that is just Nutz!

Brakes were always my first mod to the cars I've had. My 3.2 is the first car I've had that felt like the brakes were more than adequate.

Does he park it in a saltwater bath? That's some major corrosion there.

Wowzers!

I can recall a few customers over the years who had us put the wheel back on cause they wanted a second opinion. They were always in a huff that they had to sign the you-could-crash-and-die part of the work order.

Corrosion is likely the result of repetitive HEATING and cooling cycles, with a little rain thrown in for good measure now and then.
