Speedometer and Odometer stop working

Hi...

Couple weeks ago, my '89 Carrera 3.2's speedometer and odometer stop working on my way home all of a sudden. Later I browsed some previous posts on Pelican forum so I replace the speed pick-up sensor first. Unfortunately my problem did not solve, so I borrowed a working gauge from a friend of my, and put it on my car to give a test.

The result is the same...lights are working but speedometer/odometer are not.

So I took my meter to measure the sensor output from the tunnel, and I did not have any output from those brown/green lines.

Kindly asking any suggestion what should I check next...

Thank you all.

It sounds like you have a loss of continuity in the wiring. Start at one end and physically examine the wires to the other end.

If both instruments stopped at the same time you will have to look for a common source of failure such as missing +12V or ground. The two instruments use totally different sensors, so that cannot be it.

Just a thought, Manfred

Thanks for replying guys!!! Problem found!!! It turns out my fuel pump's outlet is leaking, and gasoline somehow affect the speedometer's ground just slight right above the fuel pump. After I put on a new fuel pump, both speedometer and odometer run again.

No wonder I smell gas fume from time to time while driving.

What an odd problem solving experience!!!
