Joe, i know you were asking bell but i thought i would update all on my progress. The mold was finished but i sent it back for a minor change. I did pull a part from the mold before it was modified and worked on the installation questions. The original plan had to modified a little so that the top will fit 86 on frames as well. I am still on budget and will still be able to offer the fiberglass top in november as planed. The first part from the mold was a very nice piece anyone would be proud to put on their car.
My big concern is to be sure the installation is easy and fool proof.
Jerry

I haven't posted in a while, and just stumbled onto this thread after considering buying a Sundial top on E-Bay. However, this "Pelican Gang" project sounds awesome. I am ready to get in line for one of these tops. Do you need volunteers to help man the assembly line? If so, count me in (I am in San Francisco...not too far away).

I see the last post was one month ago, so let me be the one to ask for another status check. Jerry - you rock!

I should have the new part from the revised mold next week. Then a new test fitting and make any adjustments that may need to be addressed and sign off on the mold. The tooling costs have doubled over the original estimate but i think i will be able to prorate those costs and not go over the original price of the top, just sell more tops. Thank you all for your interest and i will keep you posted on all new developments.

Good to see this is still going. I am interested, particularly if the top is a tinted/see-through type. I just put my top on after fixing it. The darkness it caused is not nearly as "ambiance filled" as the open air. I'm hoping a top that lets light in will help - kinda like the new Targas.

Lexan top

This is my first post so bear with me, I have an old hard back copy of ????can't remember the name right now and I think I know where it is (I don't throw anything P-related away) that had a company in it that sold these tops somewhere in the Southeast. I'll find it and let you know what I find. This book had to be published in about 1982.

Jerome, you are thinking of Saratoga Tops. They no longer make the hard targa top for the 911.

Kurt V, correctomungo, found my 'Porsche 911", A History of Porsche's best loved model' by the auto editors of Consumer Guide. Page 63, "Saratoga Tops in Lexan" never gives or gave a price, published in '87. Close but 'no soap'. Interesting though the dealer was P. B. Tweeks Indianapolis, Norcross, Ga; and Signal Hill, Calif.

well an updade from my project is.............
haven't made too much progress, i have aquired a bunch of parts (some latches/frame material), still looking for a good alternative to using expensive stock seals, i think i'm on the right track though. and i have steel for the mold and have the curvature roughly cut out. my contact for thermal forming this has been extremely busy and other than getting the info he needed off of my spare top it hasn't gone too far with him.
i should have more time to get this going faster after x-mas.

no major ground has been broken yet, i have found a better supplyer for the hardware to affix the "glass" to the frame, pretty slick fasteners, allen panhead style........flat on top, angled underneath for countersinking. i should be able to get away with only having to use 6 total and not lose any strength.
that's it so far, i'll be able to get rolling more on this after i get a few personal things settled.
later

I am having 10 fiberglass tops made and they should be finished at the end of next week, say March 7th. I still have to finalize the installation text and pictures and get the advertizing pictures done. I can't use the picture of the prototype as its the wrong color.I have never seen anything that seems so simple become so complicated, of coarse part of it is me wanting to be sure i have a good product. It is much easier and cheaper to do it right the first time. The fabricator i am working with is very good but has never done anything quite like this before so on parts of it we are both learning.Even just finding boxes to ship the top in are not easy to aquire.

I still have many e-mail addresses and will let all know when i am ready to go
