old tired wiring, what to do?

I am working on a long term project and as I disassemble the car I notice how hardened the wires are. What are my options? I don't know that I want to go the after market painless wiring route. I would like to keep all the functions of the original switches.

btw the car is a 71 911T that I am converting to a hot rod with a 3.2

You should contact Dennis Powell on here. His screen name is timmy2. He makes amazing replacement wiring harnesses. He made my engine harness. His workmanship and materials are top level. Everything looks factory and he is super helpful and patient. A great guy all around.

How bad is your wiring? The insulation on the wires in my '71 is still OK and serviceable, and I have yet to have any problems with cracking.

Many years ago, in the '80s, I "rewired" my car. Long story short, I obtained a second harness from a wreck. I cleaned or replaced every connector in the car. I built, from scratch, a new engine harness using all the correct wires.

Not sure if this option will work for you, but I have had no electrical problems in the past 20 years on my car.

A mouse set up shop at some point so there are some wires that need service. I can repair most of it but it is still 42 yr old wiring. I am most concerned about the higher amperage stuff.

Dennis (Timmy2) can take care of it. I sent him my harness and he did a great job resoring it. He needs some of the original parts, but has had some of the nla fittings reproduced.

That make look like a high price but is really a pretty good deal. See if he will add in a modern blade type fuse box too.

Also, find out if the wires will match the color codes that Porsche used.

Sundevil64,
I saw your PM.
I'm at work all weekend for too many hours keeping a 500,000 volt transformer from blowing up so the west coast can cook turkeys next week!

Thanks Lorne, Norm and Ed for the kudos, I appreciate it.

Thank you, Dennis. You saved me a lot of possible aggravation. Unfortunately you're also indirectly contributing to the extinction of a lot of turkeys... delicious yummy turkeys.

Dennis,

No problem. I am not in a hurry. I am still stripping the car.

What it boils down to is this...it's 2 AM ....on a lonley back road...no traffic...and the car slowly rolls to a stop with smoke coming out from under the dash.
Now....don't you regret not replacing all those 40 year old wires?

Bob,

Lol. Are you using fear as a tactic?

If I was heading to the in-laws it could be considered a blessing...

On a serious note, I am finding more and more breaches in the harnesses from mice (little teeth marks). I realize reliability is key in a fun car.
