Outer fan pulley half worn out?

Am new to Porsche world; just bought '88 911 3.2 with G50. Previous owner had done much recent work, including new belts. But found fan/alternator belt very loose. Read many threads on this; removed nut and found all 6 shims on outside under cup washer. Belt was NAPA and couldn't verify on NAPA site that it was right for the car, so ordered correct Contitech from our host. Same story. Outer pulley half goes on fine. Belt is in the right groove on the crank. I tighten nut a bit at a time and crank the engine in between to ensure belt is seating. Tighten nut to the 30 ft-lb spec. But even with all six shims on the outside, belt is still way too loose -- getting nearly an inch of deflection. Outer pulley half doesn't LOOK particularly worn, but is there some measurement I can take to verify? Is it possible that the fan is in too far on the shaft, i.e. is there possibly some spacer missing that should be behind it? Is there a measurement spec for how much shaft with threads should be extending out beyond it? Frustrated; don't want to drive the car, knowing how important adequate fan cooling is, but dying to. Thanks for any suggestions.

Test assemble without the belt in place and check the pulley outer is pulling up tight against the fan pulley section. Start out with 3 washers in between and 3 out and try again. Photos might help others to help you.

Many people are having trouble with the Conti belts being to large.
Get a different make belt and try it.

Go with a Dayco belt. If I remember correctly the size is 15280. I'm not sure if Pelican stocks this or not. I have had no issues with this brand of belt.

There is another very recent thread on changes to Conti belts. I believe it was John Walker who said that Conti belts with white lettering on them are newer and of poorer quality.

The older style belt with yellow lettering is the better quality, if you can find them.

Damn. I just checked and I have a white letter Conti belt (new). I'm going to look around for a yellow letter one.

Is it really the belt quality?

Thanks to all who replied. Mine is the white-lettering Conti belt. This begs two obvious questions:
1. If the white-letter belt is known to be a problem, why are people still selling it?
2. Are you kidding me??? A belt manufacturer's quality control is so bad that they can't even get the length right? Thought the auto industry had this one down about a hundred years ago... What next; out-of-round tires?

Before I go buying (yet) another belt, just to address some of the other suggestions, I did take the belt off and re-assemble things with all 6 shims on the outside of the pulley half, under the cup washer and nut. The pulley half DOES seem to seat properly all the way against the half on the fan. Will include photo below.

Will try to find another belt, but really wondering if something else is going on here...

The genuine Porsche belt is only 10.67 retail. Buy one and your problem will be solved. I quit using aftermarket belts several years ago, they just don't fit.

Here's today's stupid question: Where do you get a genuine Porsche belt? PP doesn't have them, and there is no Porsche dealer anywhere near me since Porsche killed the one dealership that was in this region.

Pelican shows both lengths of alternator belts in stock. Part number 999-192-176-50-M100 for 9.5x7.10 and 999-192-097-50-M100 for 9.5x7.25. Brand for both is Genuine Porsche.

For what it's worth I've got a NAPA belt on mine. It's been fine for 3 years now.

Pelican can supply any part Porsche sells. Call them and ask for the belt by part number. Or, buy it from a dealer that will ship parts. There's umpteen of those, just a phone call away.

See, I got the stupid part right... Good way to get advice, evidently.

Thanks for the info. I was going to use a three-year-old, but good, yellow lettered Conti on the car and keep the white lettered one as a spare. I'll get a Porsche belt and keep the yellow Conti as a spare.

Sooner or later, the spare will be too old to use. Another strategy might be to use the spare each time the belt is changed and replace the spare with a new one. Assuming you are not starting out with an old spare...

I'm also assuming relatively frequent belt adjustments and replacements. If you wait until the belt breaks, that's too long...

NAPA belt

Pete3799 mentioned his successful use of a NAPA belt. Actually, mine had a new NAPA belt on it when I got it and it, too, was too loose even with all the shims on the outside. Just curious as to what NAPA part number you've found to work. Mine was a Premium XL 25-7280.
