'89 Carrera Starter Issues

I just added an '89 Carrera to my stable and it came with a little problem that needs to be addressed immediately.

On the first attempt and only when bone cold, when I turn the key the starter makes that jaw-clinching grinding sound like when turning the key with a running engine. Next attempt it engages and starts beautifully and same with any subsequent starts with a hot engine.

If this wasn't an '89, I'd simply swap starters and be done with it, but because it is an '89, starter replacement is really a partial engine drop.

So, given that, should I be worried about the flywheel ring gear being damaged too or does this type of problem usually only involve the starter?

I want to replace the firewall insulation anyway so the partial engine drop isn't all bad.

So am I over thinking this or should I be prepared for more?

Well, when you live in the same city as John Walker, no responses to a question on Pelican means thank God I live in the same city as John Walker!

The starter change on the G50 is done lowering the nose of the transmission for access.
The bigger bell housing moves the starter closer to the underbody cutting access but the shifter of the transmission isnt inside the car body like the 915 trans allowing the lowering of the nose.

Darryid,
It may be the ring gear is too thin. When they moved to the G50 box, with a thicker flange, the starter guy didn't get the memo so the pinion is farther from the ring. The fix is to install a thicker ring.

John Walker's got the car today so I pulled the classic, "HELP ME MR. WIZARD!!!" on the '89 Carrera and will focus my time on a '56 oval window Bug that's going to be tearing up the streets with a 70 hp Okrasa engine sometime in the next few months!

Changing the starter in the Carrera would have been something I could have done myself but the reality is the flywheel starter ring gear is most probably shot, then the clutch is probably due, then the flywheel itself is probably due, then... more Alaska Airlines Visa miles.
