70 2.2 to a 66 901 trans -- any issues I need to know?
I'm a newbie about to put a 1970 2.2 in my '66 912 conversion (conversion done decades ago. I bought without an engine).
A couple of questions: First, re the push/pull clutch system. Will the clutch package currently on the 2.2 work with my 901 trans? Second. The trans is in the car. Wayne's book suggests replacing the engine without dropping the trans. What's the chances of a first-timer doing this correctly? Would I be better off to drop the trans? Thanks much. I'd ask for helpers, but I'm in Montana. Haven't even seen a Porsche since I arrived four months ago. ![]() Joe |

No, That 2.2 flywheel, clutch, pp, to bearing set up will NOT work with that earlier tranny. I would drop the tranny.

This mod has been done. The pull clutch cable will be a problem for sure. I'm also not sure if the 225mm 2,2 flywheel will fit in the 901 trans case.
The 2,2 clutch release arm has a Mickey Mouse pivot that is problematic. In my opinion I would stay with the release mechanism that your trans has. That may limit you to the 2,0's 215 clutch and flywheel. What clutch and flywheel parts do you have now? All stock 2,2? You might want to post a picture. You could just switch to the earlier clutch, pressure pkate and flywheel and keep the push clutch configuration.it won't quite have the torque capacity of the 2.2 but will be fine for general use. I had this for a time with no problems. Otherwise you may need to find the 70-71 transmission.

When I put a '70 T motor in my '66 I had to use the flywheel and clutch package from the original 2.0.
You're going to need a 2.0 flywheel, clutch plate, pressure plate, TO bearing, and flywheel bolts...and maybe the insert that the flywheel bolts go through. Dropping the tranny will make the conversion a lot easier. The only other thing I had to change out was the front sheet metal piece (2.0 to 2.2) as the original one wouldn't clear the 2.2 oil cooler. Disclaimer - it's been 10 years since I did this so I may have forgotten some stuff...

If youre 2.2 clucth pakage is good and bearing i would go whith 70-71 trans and a cable because if you want to bigger moteur you can go up 3.0 same set up.Anyway 2.0 flyweel is expensive .well that means you have to spend money .

Thanks for the tips. I'm going to stick with the 901 transmission. So it looks like I'll need the clutch/flywheel package from a 2.0. Anyone have one for sale? I've got a nice one from a 2.2 to trade as well.
