What do you think of placing the Intercooler?

I have some plans on putting my "big" Intercooler in the enginehood insted of mounting it on the engine as original Intercoolers. I have no problem with mounting it there the only thing I wondering about is witch way should be the best to make tight between the cooler-pipes and the pipes against the turbo when I close the enginehood, I seen one with some kind of "flex-tube" or something.. What does you think is the best way to do this? /Jocke

Seems to me if the pipe is flexible enough to move in the way you describe then it isn't going to like being under boost pressure.

Your idea is so that you can work on the car easier? When I built my intercooler for my car I designed it so that I car have it off the car in 5 minutes or less. I also think it would be hard to make the hose work in that situation. I don't know what tail you have but there is not much room to fit a good size intercooler in there. And the 930 need a good sized intercooler to work right

I too have thought about doing this. There are a couple of real problems. The obvious one is sealing a hingeable joint, or sealing two butt joints. The second is weight. Intercoolers are extremely heavy when it comes to hood shocks and fiberglass turbo tales.

The Intercooler is 870 x 350 x 65mm and if I can build it in it should fit very good in that shape. Itīs much larger place up against the air-inlet then the gap down to the engine. Thatīs my idea! /J

I find it will be a EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TASK,I have never seen anything like that, all your connections MUST be very secure to have a good flow and no leaks,Sorry on this one but no help, here is a few pictures of different set ups but all sit inside

This is how the Intercooler looks like, if I should put it into the original spot I have to made new sides on it with another shape and the flow may not be right.

You still HAVE to secure it to the motor, otherwise it will pop off.Just look at the other installations pictured here and you see how much bracing they take- it isn't just to support the cooler, it is to hold it down and tight! I understand your space problem, but you need to find a way to make your's removable without a lot of hassle good luck

The only way to make it easier to work on is to make sure you can get to the charge air cooler mounting bolts. The connecting hose is just that, for connection purposes only (and vibration control). Even with the wire reinforced type they are designed only to bridge short gaps. And they will blow up like a baloon so torque the clamps to specs (use the right clamps also) Chris

You won't be able to run the engine with the hood open? I would think that will be more inconvenient than removing the intercooler for service. And you would run the risk of 'stuff' getting into the open intake with the hood open?

Here are a few reasons NOT to do it:- - You WILL have a pressure leak under boost. The silicone hoses need to be fairly tight to ensure no charge air escapes under boost and also allows for a bit of movement as the engine is under load. Simply sliding the intercooler on top of some silicon hoses will not ensure a proper/tight seal. - If you do go this route, you will have to ensure 110% that nothing drops in the intake tract when the hood is open, otherwise if something drops back into the turbo's compressor and/or the intake, you'll have some pretty major & costly problems. - If ease of servicing is what you are after, just fasten the intercooler to the various engine mount points so that it's a <= 5 min job to remove and replace, thus minimising service costs and the potential for serious engine/turbo damage if something were to fall into the intake tract somewhere - As dad991 says above, you won't be able to run the engine with the hood open during diagnostics etc. In fact, if you do run the engine lid opn, thus creating a break in the intake, you'll be sucking unfiltered air into the intake It's your car/money/call, BUT I personally wouldn't try to re-invent the wheel.

I don't understand. Will the cooler you have not fit? If you are going to try to sell it, and it will fit my '79, how much do you want for it. But (and here is the confusion), if it would fit my car, why not yours?

The problem is with the original turbo tail as the picture shows with the wing removed from the hood. The socket is only about 750mm wide. The cooler does fit on the engine but the opening in the hood is much smaller then up against the air-inlet. /J
