Voltage can vary between a volt or so and six. More important is polarity. You probably have pos and neg swapped.

A couple of failed attempts with the $2.00 key fobs from Wallmart. Only I can make a simple little project so difficult!

I wasn't very efficient with my lead bending and I eventually lost both LEDs. A visit to Radio Shack brought too more LEDs with longer leads. Came up with hybrid approach, Radio Shack LEDs, batteries and buttons from Wallmart key fob. Success! Thanks for the great innovation.

Could you tell me the part # of the LEDs you used and the total voltage of the battery(ies)? I've yet to get mine to work. Thank you!

276-0017 Radio Shack part number I noted on the LED package photo found earlier in this thread. Using two batteries that come with the Wallmart $2.00 key fob delivered sufficient juice. Good luck!

Maybe late to the party but just ordered these from eBay:
Description Unit price Qty Amount
5mm • High Brightness White LED #276-0017 By RadioShack
Item# 331533403197 $3.98 USD 1 $3.98 USD

I've been wanting to do this for a while. Upgrading lots of lights on my Carrera to LED, instrument, dome, and eventually brake, tail, turn signal front and rear. But not sure about head lights yet.
