Started on my engine conversion

With the interior finished:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psw6n8sim2.jpg

It's time to replace the 2.7 and non-LSD 915:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psnujccgzz.jpg

I'll drop the engine on Saturday for pick up on Monday and shipping to Troy in CA.

Meanwhile, I picked up my rebuilt 84 915 from Bob at Autowerks yesterday. He installed a Guard LSD and he worked with Matt to change the gears so I could use the 74 output flanges and have it bolt right up to my axles. I also started breaking down the 3.6:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps3dc5eb08.jpg

I want it to have more of an old school look, so it is getting 50 PMOs and this cool distributor from Jim at JB Racing:

Still have to clean up the long block and paint the valve covers to make it look nice and new. More to come!

toddu 01-22-2014 03:55 PM

Love that distributor! Your interior looks great, nice and clean.

Come on, Click, a man's got to get his drink on!

Pictures of the engine drop coming and a few engine bay surprises.

Bob Harriman 01-23-2014 04:07 PM

Nice steering wheel. What is it?

mreid 01-23-2014 05:13 PM

It's a Momo Mod 7.

mreid 01-25-2014 03:00 PM

Took the engine outside for a good cleaning:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psqzwi5vkp.jpg

I also replaced the oil pressure and temp senders to be compatible with my mid-year car, modified an SC engine harness, and started the disguise of my 92 3.6 to make it look more vintage:

Tomorrow the 2.7 comes out to get crated and shipped west.

G50911 01-25-2014 03:25 PM

that looks awesome mark! (this is troy) can't wait to see your progress and for the motor/trans to get here.

mreid 01-27-2014 01:00 PM

The original engine is out and in a crate or shipping:

Nice looking 3.6 there-:)

pors1968 01-27-2014 03:33 PM

NICE what did you do to mod the engine shroud .

mreid 01-27-2014 05:04 PM

One of these:

Pelican Parts - Product Information: PEL-964993-B

A little Bulldog adhesion promoter and paint. That's it.

mreid 02-01-2014 10:36 AM

As long as the engine is out, might as well upgrade a few things:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psdqipur0s.jpg

mreid 02-01-2014 03:51 PM

Cleaned and painted the coil over reinforcement brackets and then started working on the engine again while the paint dried:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps3aoopbzm.jpg

Made a mount for the twin coils, bolted them on, and modified the rest of the top plug wires:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psnqvhojfi.jpg

Tomorrow I install the PMO carbs and start on the engine wiring. I'm not looking forward to the wiring as it appears that some PO chopped it all up. One quick question, is the red relay in the engine compartment the FP relay?

timmy2 02-01-2014 10:01 PM

What year is the body of your car? I'm guessing '74 from looking at your other threads.
The FP relay should be in the trunk....
Feel free to PM me and I will try to answer the upcoming wiring change questions you will have. :)

mreid 02-02-2014 04:49 AM

Thanks, Dennis, it is a 74. The problem is the rear harness has been chopped, spliced, deleted from, added to, and just about anything else to screw it up.

mreid 02-02-2014 01:58 PM

Installed the PMOs today. Now I can't wait to drive it:

Sounds like a 40 year old car...
Nothing we can't figure out with some dialogue, pictures and factory prints... ;)

Man that engine looks nice with the PMO's installed.

To give you some ideas, here's some pictures of an engine harness I recently built for a single plugged PMO engine.

timmy2 02-02-2014 08:17 PM

Took a few minutes tonight and looked at my factory wiring drawings. Something was nagging me in the back of my mind...

The '74-'75 engines DO NOT have a fuel pump relay... They are fed from Fuse 12 coming directly from terminal 15 of the ignition switch. The safety shut off relay was added in '76

Maybe someone added a relay to your car, or it is for something else.
May I suggest you add one for safety? A Ford Bronco II roll over switch or similar would be what I would use.

For whatever reason the '74 factory workshop drawings are all black and white. while every other year is in color... I am going to do a wire by wire comparison of function and routing with the '75 diagram to see if the wiring is the same and if one could assume the same for the color codes.

EDIT..
If anyone has a color factory current flow drawing for a '74 I would like to borrow it to copy on our color print machine and return it to you.

Bill Jennings 02-03-2014 03:21 AM

Dennis,
Its a long way for me to post the original to you but if this is what you are looking for PM me. I don't suppose you have a chart or can make a harness for a C3?

mreid 02-12-2014 03:43 PM

I figured out the wiring. Dennis was right, a PO wired one of the relays in the engine panel to power the fuel pump. Once I got all the tape removed I was able to ring all the wires and move several positions in the engine harness plug to match the chassis harness. I also added the air filters:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psr1nodw7j.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psvuoruxlo.jpg

I little more wiring work and some mods to the engine electrical panel to mount the MSDs and this bad boy gets installed!

toddu 02-12-2014 04:15 PM

Are those blaster coils? Where are the boxes going?

Todd

timmy2 02-12-2014 04:31 PM

Nice job detecting the custom wiring gremlins. :)
Your engine looks great.
And a special thank you to Bill for scanning and sending me a copy of colour diagrams. :)

mreid 02-12-2014 04:38 PM

They are blaster coils and the boxes are going where the old box, accumulator, and fuel filter used to go. Pictures this weekend.

jpnovak 02-12-2014 05:32 PM

Looks great. Bring it out to the HCR. You can finish by March right?

mreid 02-12-2014 05:37 PM

I'm already signed up and plan on being there. I should be on the road by the end of the month.

jpnovak 02-12-2014 05:46 PM

Great. We are all looking forward to the event. It will be nice to meet you.

mreid 02-13-2014 05:58 AM

You too, Jamie. See you there!

Flat6Heaven 02-14-2014 09:39 AM

Congratulations on the build! As others here, I am looking forward to "final" pics!
Good luck with everything.

trader220 02-14-2014 01:18 PM

Thats a work of art!

mreid 02-15-2014 02:48 PM

Got a lot done today!

This would have been entertaining to watch. I had to remove the stock exhaust while the engine was dangling from the hoist. What a pain!!!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...pspx1qvsw6.jpg

Everything else went pretty well. I grit blasted all the tin and got it painted. Going back on tomorrow. Installed the flywheel, clutch, and tranny. Tried to bolt on the starter, but the studs are too long for the barrel nuts. Off to the store tomorrow. It's really starting to look good!

mreid 02-23-2014 03:11 PM

Engine is going in next weekend! I ground out the old sway bar brackets and welded in the new ones, cleaned and painted the spring plates, installed he Rebel Racing bushings and coilovers, and finished the engine wiring and MSD harness. All in all, a productive weekend!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psscsrzpar.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psawrbcd8g.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psgrm6jdzg.jpg

Once the engine is in, I still have to install the front oil cooler, but at least I move to the front.

mreid 03-01-2014 08:59 AM

MSD boxes installed and wired:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psqnlrdarg.jpg

I'm now going to attempt to pull the mechanical speedo cable with the wires for the electronic version attached for one easy remove/install. Fingers crossed!

cmonref 03-01-2014 11:05 AM

In your picture of the MSD boxes, what is the silver annular ring on the outer half-shaft end, between the bolt heads and the boot retainer?

mreid 03-01-2014 04:22 PM

Good question?

mreid 03-02-2014 12:39 PM

And then...

...it's in!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psi3lxwkqj.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psnrwz5f7c.jpg

Next up:

- connect everything
- reinstall rear bumper
- move to the front and install front oil cooler

Flojo 03-02-2014 01:15 PM

Great "marriage"!

G50911 03-02-2014 01:44 PM
