Rear end clunk

Have a noise in my rear end that is drving me nuts. It's on the drivers side, suspension related I think, but can't zero in on it. If I push down on the bumper I don't necessarily hear it. I pick up on the bumper, drivers side a bit I can hear the "clunk" noise pretty regularly. If I simply bounce the bumper a bit, I don't always hear it, but sometimes I will. So it is slightly random.

I do have polybronze bushing in the rear. I wouldn't think they would clunk. I also have an adjustable sway, which I haven't tried to disconnect to see if that might be it (maybe some binding or something?). I slightly suspect my CV joints are getting close to a rebuild, but wouldn't think that would clunk moving the car up and down. The torsion bars have also been upgraded. Car has been aligned and corner balanced.

Try having a friend move it while you look for the noise source. I you are lucky just a bolt that needs snugged up.

If you can repeat the clunk, while standing, then it is most likely suspension related, check the sway bar mounts, they tend to snap over time and severe stress.

Also check the torsion bar plate cover end cap, see if they are touching.

Pick up an automotive stethoscope ($10) and you will find your problem.

Clunking in a turn is usually the CV, clunking on accel/decel or a bump is likely the sway bar mount.

spray some synthetic oil on the rear swaybar rubber bushing. Most likely these. Also make sure the adjustable swaybar hardware is tight.

Mine seems to be only if I jerk up on the rear bumper. I can for the most part bounce on the rear bumper (doesn't move much though) without noise. Was thinking of disconnecting drop links and checking it out. Maybe tomorrow.

I'm sure it's nothing to be concerned about, but now it's one of those things that just drive you nuts, you know how it is.

Could someone clarify what exactly to look for in rear shock mounts? Is this something I check inside the engine bay or from below? I have a really annoying faint clunk going over smallish bumps and I do not have a sway bar on the rear at this point (bracket to be replaced).

Make sure rear sway bar brackets haven't broken away from the body.

+1 This is exactly what happened to me and the intermittent sound you describe was the same.

For the record, my polybronze bushings clunked up until the point I replaced them with Neatrix... they've been quiet ever since :-)

But I second checking the rear sway bar mount, they rip away from the body very easily and it should be the first thing to check.
