Looked at a 911T today...
This '71 T looked kind of rough. The left front fender didn't quite line up with the front bumper. The rear/bottom corners of the doors didn't line up with the body (doors were in too far). The driver's door stop was broken off. The engine lid felt wobbly when a little pressure was applied side to side. The car had been repainted, but there were places were the original color was visible, most notably the top edge of the driver's door just below the chrome trim and the engine lid hinges. No rust was readily apparent but I really didn't look at it long enough or try poking at the undercoating. The VIN by the fuel tank didn't match the VIN plate in the front and drivers door jamb. The engine had some leaks, the driver & passenger seats felt like "springs were poking through" in various places. I couldn't find the engine number plate. The car had 'S" trim and guages, but the clock and tach didn't work. It had a dash cap installed as the original dash was in bad shape. There were a few '73 pieces on it (black grills by the front turn signals, and bumper guards). It ran rough, but we really didn't give it time to warm up. We turned it off and when we tried to start it again, it wouldn't start and we noticed a gas leak just forward of the left rear wheel. On a positive note, it had 15" FUCHs with 205's and it had the 2.2 sticker in the rear window. Based on this description, what's something like this worth? Thanks!

The Fuchs should be worth ~$450. So, I'd say the whole car is worth ~$500.
Just kidding, but it seems like a ton of work is required. Regards, Andrew M 1970 911T

Yeah, you guys are right on target. Funny thing, Lu started negotiating with the seller while I'm grabbing her arm and trying to get out of there. She likes to haggle, just for the sake of haggling! Anyway, it strikes me that a early T in this condition should be worth about $3-4k, if the numbers all matched. Of course the seller was asking more than twice this amount. Go figure.

I made the mistake of buying a project car for $3500. I sold the project for $3000 and paid $6000 for my nice 97,000 mile full history driver 1970 911T. Unless you enjoy restoring cars and like to see your money dissappear, spend the extra cash on a good example.
Just my 2 cents. |

Ripe Cherries
Jim,
There are some really sweet cars available at decent prices which would be a real pleasure to own. Pass on the rough ones. FWIW, I ocassionally go to the Mannhiem exotics auction with a dealer friend of mine. Two weeks ago he bought a gorgeous two owner '90 964 with 80K, full documentation from day one, including a PNA rebuilt engine and all the mods, for $22K. The car is showroom beautiful, and the documentation is faultless. Did I say there are some really sweet cars around??

Thanks for the encouragement, Tony. What I'm working with is a $10k budget dictated by my CFO (Lu) and the goal is an early coupe for her, preferably 72-73 T/E. It needs to be a decent, rust-free driver. I'm thinking MFI is the way to go from a maintenance and fuel economy point of view. Is this plan realistic?

Jim,
I'm in Northern CA today and you would be amazed by all the super 911's here. I think I saw just about every vintage of the 911 line today just driving around in Mountain View and Los Gatos. There's a guy in the apt. complex I'm in here who has two concourse condition 930's. That's quite a site in the garage. If you're up for traveling to find this car, CA is FULL of them. I've seen more Porsches here in two days than I've seen in 6 mos. on the east coast.

Jim:
Richard haunts from the west coast. FWIW, I bought my car from an owner in Pasadena and had it shipped here for about 700. Keep looking.

Jim--
If you really cared about Lu you would bid on that 959 on Ebay.

As an owner of a 1973.5T with CIS, its never over as far as repair, updates and maintenance goes with these older models.
The guy who owned it before me pumped a bundle into restoration from the engine rebuild to new floor pans and bare metal paint. But despite the small fortune he laid out and the amount of work performed I am still going back and chasing the gremlins associated with old wiring, rubber and metal fittings, hoses, , "rube goldberg like rigging" and the like. Its definitely a love-hate type relationship, but the love seems to always prevail! So your find, in my opinion is going to be a money pit unless you have a lift, $25,000 gift certificate to your favorite parts place and a storehouse of time and patience. Let someone else spend the mega bucks on restoration or find a more suitiable model thats good to excellent in the performance standards. It will pay to shell out the thousands more for a better and more appreciable example. Regards Bob 73.5T |
