915 tool question

I'm going to build this tool (41mm socket)

I have a 41mm impact socket on the way, does anyone know how big the ID of the pipe has to be to clear the shaft it goes over? I'm thinking 1" but don't want to find out the hard way.

mine is 1 1/8" inside, 36mm outside, 15" total length and the pipe only is 11". they used a 1 1/16" socket on the end.

Thank you John, I bought a 1" drive 41mm hoping the opening would be big enough but sounds like I will have to open it up some, weld the pipe to it, weld a 27mm 1/2" drive socket to the end..

My P252A measures about 7/8" pipe ID, and about 1 1/4" OD. These measurements were NOT made with a precision tool, just a carpenters rule + eyeball. The overall length of the tool is about 13 11/16". The tool is made so that the pipe slips inside of the socket, by a little more than about a half inch. The socket, including its flange, measures about 2.5" outside, and measures from its tip to the pipe, inside, about 1 7/8". I guess that you'll have to adjust length based on the size/depth of your socket, or if you're going to do some machining or just butt-weld the pipe.

Thank you Peter, i'll make it a bit oversized to be sure I have the clearance. Also making up the spline tool using my old clutch disc and 1/4" flat stock!

1 inch size socket (not 1/2 inch) is plenty.

Are you saying the shaft will clear the 1" drive socket opening without me opening it up more?

Yes,
The 41mm 1-inch socket will slide over the input shaft.

when I did my 915, I bought a 1/2 inch one and had to open it up a bit to get it to fit.

Great! That will save me a lot of time, now all I have to do is a little welding..
Thanks!

It would be much easier to weld a 1/2 socket on the side, making a crowfoot. Then to torque the nut you either do the simple calculations for a crowfoot on a TQ wrench or keep it oriented at 90 degrees from the handle. You won't be able to use an impact for removal though.

That's what I did:

Thinking outside the box, and I like your spline lock rig! What is the "Crowfoot multiplier" for torque?

Your too good to me Dan! Actually I like acquiring tools and playing with my MIG so this does both..
I have the correct plates and a 20T press now too!

When I go to swap gears and the nose of the 915 if I could borrow the pinion depth tool for a weekend that would be lovely.. can't make that one!

No calculations have to be done if the crowfoot is oriented 90 degrees from the wrench.

The following link is to a very long thread, but your torque answer can be found on page 8, posts 108-111. The thread got a little contentious, but I think that you'll find it informative, maybe even entertaining. Cheers!
