Tdc?
I search archives to no avail. Trying to adj valves and ran into prob finding #1 TDC on my 88 3.2. I lined the rotor up with the large notch on dist (not small notch like in Waynes book) and I get slight rocker arm movement on #3 cyl...NOT #1 (as if it's #3 at TDC)! #1 is rock solid, as if under pressure from cam lobes. The crank is lined up with a notch but there's nothing like in Wayne's book to know what the hell the notch means. I've adj valves on BMWs so I "sort of" know what I'm doing but this has me baffled. What am I doing wrong, other than doing something better left to better mechanics than me.

I don't even remove the disti cap for this procedure.
There are four marks around the main pulley on the engine. 3 marks are exactly 120 degrees apart, and the fourth is sort of next to one of the other 3 marks. The fourth is the timing mark for the appropriate point where the coil fires at the number one cylinder. So I turn the main pulley with a socket and ratchet until the "fourth" mark lines up with the index on the engine case, continue turning until the next mark lines up and stop. This mark is the TDC mark for either number 1 (or number 4). In this case you feel the rocker to find out which one. If it is loose at 1, you are there. If it is loose at 4, then you start adjusting valves at number 4 and then follow the firing order of the engine for the rest of the cylinders. You just turn the crank 120 degrees to line up the next mark and that is TDC for the next cylinder. I never had to even remove the dist cap for that purpose. |

There will be four marks (maybe only 3 on your year, not sure) on the crank pulley. Three are 120 degrees apart. The one at TDC will have the fourth mark just prior to TDC. You need to line up to the small mark on the distributer and then you should be at TDC and then the pulley mark should line up to the mark on the bottom of the fan housing.
You should then be able to wiggle the #1 rocker, unless it is adjusted too tight and then it will be harder to move. Good luck |
