Hi
|
Possible Valve Noise
Hello Everyone.
I have a 1984 3.2 Carrera. I'm hearing, what sounds like, valve clearance noise on the right bank. Everytime I check the valve adjustment everything is in tolerance. This noise is only apparent when the engine is at operating temperature and the oil is hot. In the morning, the noise is barely audible. The engine runs strong and does not blow out any smoke during acceleration, nor at deceleration. The spark plugs look like they are a tad on the lean side. No oil residue at all. Right now I'm using 20w-50 full synthetic. I will be performing a compression check and leak-down check this weekend. Any ideas?

Try to use a stethoscope to narrow down the location, if you don't have a stethoscope, use a long screwdriver and place your ear on the handle while placing the tip in different locations.
Check your chain boxes, and don't rule out an exhaust leak. Be careful not to get anything caught in the fan.

Been there, valve job. Guides, rockers, shafts, they all have to be looked at. Cam too. OTOH you could just live with the noise till you can't take it anymore.
You don't say but over 100k miles I suppose.
