strange noise

I was just making plans for Carrera tensioners when WHAM,chain tensioner noise. Or so I thought. Took covers off and everything looks fine. Chains tight, ramps OK,nothing binding,no chunks of anything in there. I put it back together and started it up. Now I have this strange squeaking noise intermittently that I cannot pinpoint. The car runs fine, it just makes this noise that is freaking me out. I think I may be hearing the dreaded chain tensioner noise that I have avoided all these years.
BTW,it's a 69S with mechanical tensioners that have been in the car for 20 years.
Any ideas??? It is NOT the fan belt....
