difficult in finding gears

I have a 911 SC 1979. just acquired it after long period in storage. Pretty immaculate condition. Only issue is I have trouble finding 1st and second gears also occasionally reverse. It seams to get stuck in third. Gear shifter moves no problem at all just not making the selection When I got car it had been over filled with oil. I have replaced the oil. that is about all ive done. Any idears

Lots of threads on this subject, use the search box above. You'll hear to check the obvious. Bushings at the shifter, bushings at the coupler and adjustment. You'll also find that there are a lot of opinions regarding gear lube. Generally either Swepco or Kendall. Adjustment of the linkage is critical in how well the 915 will shift or not. You don't mention mileage of the vehicle, that would help determine possible solutions for the problem. Is the clutch adjusted correctly? Warren

How mechanically-inclined are you? These cars lend themselves well to careful mechanics who work methodically. Before I would have the trans rebuilt (dear god...) I would take the time to perform the following checks:

= Replace trans oil with Kendall GL. Always remove the Fill plug before the Drain plug when doing so. Drop oil into spotless pan and run a magnet around to see what might be in there.

= Clutch pedal to trans: Adjust the cable at the trans to required specifications.

= Shift lever to trans: Replace all bushings (cup, "O" in tunnel, coupler bushings). Search Zimmerman + coupler setup to pre-set shift lever to correct position. Leave adjustment cover for coupler off and wrenches handy for readjustment.

Now you will have done most everything you can to nurse that 915 along. After this, trans mounts, rebuild pedal cluster, inspect "O" brass bushings for clutch pedal "ear" in the tunnel for wear - when this dies, you ovalize the area around it and that can cause issues.
