Voltage less than set point (13.6 typical) put current through the field winding and turn it hard on - that is maximum current it will produce at a given RPM. Old school regulators typical have very high gain in the control loop around typically a zenner diode setpoint..

EDIT: more explicitly it controls SYSTEM voltage by controlling alternator current.
Stop guessing and/or reading mis-information from the internet and actually
take an alternator apart and test it & the regulator!

SoCal-

There are many ways to troubleshoot and repair systems.
A few knowledgable folks here have established your methods do more harm than good.

"The point, which was obviously missed, is that under those conditions (that can
occur on occasion) the alternator can exceed it's rated output and destroy itself.
And having a large battery, e.g. 80-100Ahr/1000CCA, that can provide high output
currents can also draw high charging currents exceeding the rated alternator's output."

Only someone with absolutely no practical experience would say something like that-

I've got a 600 amp hour house battery bank on my yacht. My 80 amp alternator is fine charging the bank without exceeding the alternator's output.

I don't know why you have a need to prove everyone's accurate suggestions wrong.

Your arrogance is exceeded only by your ignorance.

The sad part isn't your folly-

It's the fact that knowledgable folks who don't have time to argue with idiots and move on when their valuable experience could help someone from causing harm to their vehicles or themselves.

So! Wait until one or more of the batteries fails or begins to draw excessive currents
continuously beyond the alternator's rating. Just because a system hasn't yet
failed doesn't imply that it's operating in a reliable mode.
