Short Shift Kit

I installed a factory short shift kit last week and really like it. I don't notice a significant difference in effort in shifting and I like the shorter throw. The most important part for me was replacing all of the bushings when I did it. That really tightened things up. Now, if I can just replace my clutch and synchro rings.....

Since we are talking about longer levers, I figure I'd ask about one I am selling. I started another post about it a week ago but it went nowhere.

It has the pivot-to-ball dimensions of an M241 short shifter lever but it is slightly longer than the 911 shift levers I'm used to seeing. It is also slightly larger in diameter for most of the shaft length and has been machined down to a normal diameter at the end, to accept a normal Porsche shift knob. It seems nicely made and is welded where the two halves come together, unlike the usual glued factory joint.

Anybody have an idea what this is and who made it?

I've got one that looks the same ( has the turned down end to attach the shift knob) but no idea where it came from originally. Hopefully someone will know,

I installed one recently and really like it. I was having tons of shifting problems (felt like stirring a stew pot to find a gear). The combination of a Wevo PSJ, replacing all the bushings (some of which come with the factory kit) and installing the short shift kit tightened everything up. I still need a clutch job, but 80% of the shifting problems were fixed with those changes. I also performed them myself, but following printed instructions I did them myself. Easy peasy.

I'm 6'3" with a massive ape index. I see no value in a shorter shift throw. Most short shifters speed up the shifting, which on a 915 also speeds the wear on the synchros.

The Wevo gate shift internal mod is money better spent IMO.

Kits suck.....go with a WEVO shifter or equivalent.

I've got the factory short shift in my car. After I put in the shift coupler bushings, shift rod bushing and bushing at ball of the shifter, I really like the feel of the shift. It reminds me of the WEVO my brother has in his car. I'm sure some will scoff at this but I've driven both and they feel very comparable. My only complaint is the lever is shorter but I have long arms (my kids say I have monkey arms. Ya gotta love kids). I find that extension in the pic above interesting.

Do a search for user ivangene. He can do a modification to your stock shifter and add self-centering and improve the shift feel. He also sells a modified coupler that will improve shifting. It is all relatively economical compared to buying a high-end short shift system. There are several threads about his work.

Like a few here I installed the factory SSK. Had replaced all bushings and installed the coupler whisperer coupler. Found the SSK OK, but not great and a bit of a stretch to reach. I then procured and installed the 911pcars (Sherwood) extension. The feel is now perfect, similar throw to a standard shifter but the shift knob is now much closer to the wheel. In the picture the shifter is in first gear and there is 4 1/2 inch gap to the wheel.

Suggestion, now splurge on a Seine gated shifter kit, and you will love it even more!
That's exactly what I did to my shifter, SSK, "whisperer" bushings, Seine gate shifter and stick extension. It now feels like a well engineered system. 911 owners that I have let test drive my car marvel at how great it feels and shifts! The shift knob just falls into you hand in exactly the optimum position and the gated shifting feels real positive. NO missed shifts!
