She just cuts out. No warning. Please advise
76 2.7 running webers. Took her out for a spin yesterday as it was perfect. Outside temp was about 80 oil temp a shade below 200f. After about an hour of spirited driving the car just shuts down with the tach bouncing all over.
. I ghost ride it to a safe spot, get out and check out all the connections and all looks ok. Fuel pump is running and the car cranks. I wait a few min and it roars back to life and since I'm 3 miles from home I gun it and go. It then dies a mile at the next light. I wait a few min and it comes back to life and I make it home. Once home I try and to get it to crap out with no success. From what I've read it sounds like a failing CDI. If you Have any other ideas let me know. Since I can't replicate it makes it difficult to diagnose. Last edited by Uncle Enzo; 05-25-2014 at 07:09 AM.. |

Cdi.......
What brand CDI you have now installed? Next time you happen to experience this problem again, check if you have ignition sparks. The problem seems to be temperature related. Keep us posted.

For what it's worth.......I had precisely the same symptoms on a ride to Vegas one weekend. Wire between the distributor cap and the coil was broken inside.
Mechanic in Baker pulled one off a junked VW bug and sent me on my way in 5 minutes. Luckiest, easiest temporary fix I've ever had. Saved a great weekend too. Best of luck, Scott

Definitely sounds like an ignition problem when hot. Usually, if you hear the Bosch CD humming, it's working ok. I'd also consider a bad wire or connection as a possibility, but these intermittent problems are sometimes tough to find.
There has been a lot of discussion on various ignition systems to replace the Bosch unit, and there are folks that are repairing these units as well. Hope you find the source of the problem so you can continue to enjoy the ride!

Check your fuel pump fuse for corrosion and the terminals are tight. Also check the fuel pump relay is good and tight.

Check all the fuses and relay. All checks out fine. I've had a fp relay poop out before and this was far more abrupt. Just shut down. No warning.

Agree with others here. Sounds like ignition box or coil. Seems like there has been a rash of these lately.

Any recommendations on a coil as the Bosch unit seems to get poor reviews.

Alternator stator winding is shorting out intermittently, EMI couples to CDI results in random plug firing, tach jumps, hits rev-limit, rev-limit locks up...
Recovery...switch off, count to 10 slowly, restart.. |

Once it stalls, don't turn the ignition off but open the engine lid and listen to the CDI. If the hum is higher in pitch and fainter it confirms the CDI box is failing. It latches up. This typically happens at high temperatures. Once you power-cycle the box (turn ign off the on) the hum returns back to normal @ 3.5kHz. Depending on how long you wait before driving again the box cools down somewhat and will work for another couple of minutes before the cycle repeats.

Had the same problem the wire inside the distributor would touch the distributor cam when the engine was warm. I found it when I installed a pertronix ignitor
