Tea tray spoiler yea or na?

I have an opportunity to purchase a tea tray spoiler for my 1978 911 SC and
it comes with all hardware and rubber gaskets and is an original Porsche part.
I would have to paint to match my cars color. Looking for opinions if it would add or distract for the original look of my stock SC. I'm pretty sure this was an optional item
on the SC.

Actually the standard "tea tray spoiler" was not an option on the SCs. They had there own mainly rubber version. (tea tray spoiler is fiberglass+rubber lip)
They still look good though but according to Porsche you must also fit a rubber front spoiler.

My 78SC has both spoilers (tea tray spoiler on the rear) and it looks fine although I have considered removing them and going to a stock look.

tea tray spoiler installation?

Here is a pic of the car the tea tray spoiler came from. Not sure if it was added at the
dealership or from factory. It is an original Porsche part.

The wing above is not a tea tray (Turbo wing), but a Carrera wing (whale tail).

Regardless, I think 911 bodies of that era definitely look much better with a tail, so I say yea.

The red tail pictured is a Carrera tail and not what is commonly referred to as a "Tea Tray". Tea tray or Turbo tail has upturned sides and a larger base to clear the turbo car's intercooler. The tea tray was the optional tail for the later SCs. -J

More info with photos here.
"Correct" tail for a RoW 911SC?

It's a whale tail.

And tea trays should only be on wide bodies and/or turbo engines imo

My cab came with the turbo spoiler. I'd like to get rid of it but the wife and kids won't let me. Don't do it. Enjoy the classic Super Carrera lines as they are...

Your car is not wide enough to visually support the spoiler.

I say na. The whale tails only work with wide body 911s.....IMHO. Clean and tasty is the way.

regards,
Al

I like the tray (my 1973 had one). Very convenient to have a flat place to place a beverage and the vents allow me to keep my food warm.

Some UK models came with the tea tray as standard fitment. I also believe it was an option in Australia.

I think the tea tray looks fantastic on wide bodies but I'm on the fence for narrow bodies like mine.

I have both the tea tray and standard lid and I am constantly thinking about which one to leave on the car...

Here's pics (without spoiler one is when the car had no engine, hence the stance!)

Let's assume you don't buy it. Where would that money go? Tires? Suspension? Interior? Beer?

That would help me decide. I would always choose interior improvements over exterior and suspension/driving improvements over making it look better. YMMV, it's your car.

I would never ever even consider having SPOILer in my 911 SC 1982. IMO, It ruins beautiful lines of 911. 930 Turbo is different, but I like the simplistic shape of normal 911 more.

If you have the front spoiler than the rear wing is beneficial to your car. It becomes a lot more stable at higher speeds. This I know due to my previously owned 85 Carrera that I added a tail to. Now as far as looks go, both look great. I had a Targa that I much preferred without a tail...good thing you can always switch back. If you can get a rear deck as well it would be great, that way you can just swap out everything without risking damage to your original deck.

MY SC has the Tea Tray because (I think) one of the P/O's put it on; it looks like a non-factory installation to me. Personally I wish I had a stock rear deck lid, so my vote is don't do it! I think the cars look much better w/o it. And practically speaking, in normal driving, does it really matter much performance-wise?

If you must though, get a different decklid to put it on and paint to match. Keep the pristine stock lid for reinstallation later in case you don't like or get tired of the look.
