Headlight washer pump
I am one of the folks that actually drives my 911 on long road trips. I will be driving to Parade in Monterey, CA in just over a week. It seems on every trip I drive through a rain storm. I actually use the headlight washers.
Right now mine work, but they leak like crazy. I hose must be split or a fitting is broken. My question is how in the heck can I get to it? ![]() Do I really have to remove the bumper? Can I just drop the washer tank and get to it that way? I have the Bentley manual and it does not mention the pump replacement at all. Do any of you have a factory workshop manual that shows the process? There has to be an easier way than removing the bumper.

I suppose it would depend on where you think the leak is. You might try pulling the valance off first.

I do believe the light washer pumps are mounted out on the bottle at the forward edge.
You can drop the bottle without disassembling the front bumper. Need to pull wheel, Evap. canister, and various connecting hoses. Next undo the bolt for strap at bottom the tank. If it's full, it is going to be heavy and awkward. If you're leaking at the nozzle connections you can reach up from underneath and remove turn signal lights. 8mm lock nuts. Pain to get them loose... Small 1/4 driver/socket combo. Cooper |

Glen, are you talking about the actual washer jets leaking or some other part of the headlight washer system leaking? I recall cleaning up and refurbishing the pump for the windshield and it was sunk down in the very front of the trunk just behind the front bumper. Bit of a pain to get to but I'd think the washer for the headlights would be in the same general area. My '88 does not have that option so I'm sort of guessing.

The headlight washer pump on an '85 is not in the trunk.
There are a lot of connections in the system and most of them are behind the front bumper. I'd still suggest running it and looking for the general area of the leak before deciding what to to. JR |

I replaced the pump and squirter nozzles last year when I had the bumper, valance and lower fender extensions removed for a full respray, can't imagine replacing these items any other way...

The windshield washer pump in inside the trunk next to the battery and the front condenser fan, That one is fine. On my 85 the headlight washer is a separate pump. If use the headlight washers the jets work fine but a lot of water comes leaking out onto the ground from about where the pump must be. Obviously I am not getting full pressure to the squirters is the fluid is running out onto the ground.
I just hope it is a split hose or something fairly simple. I have a replacement pump in case that is the problem. It is possible that the pump froze last winter. It got down to zero degrees while I was driving the car. I have the blue antifreeze water in the system but I don't know how low of temp it can really handle. If I can just drop the washer tank without getting into the AC hoses I should be fine. I just don't want to drop the tank and THEN find out that it was a wast of time and I needed to pull the bumper. Conversely I don't want to pull the bumper and find out I need to drop the tank. I know the Bentley manual is nice for a lot of things but it is 100% useless for this process.

I have a bumper with washers and also the tank with washer pump (not original to car),
and nothing is hooked up (no switches etc). Last summer, I installed new AC barrier hoses, and to make things easier, I dropped the washer tank/headlight pump assy. If you just need to check the pump, the tank/pump unit comes off no problem!

It may just be the rubber grommet that seals the pump to the reservoir, or it could be the pessure hose coming out of the pump, but I don't think you can get to the pump without removing the lower fender extension. I looked at doing that before deciding to do the respray and quickly decided it was not a likely prospect.
