Shift fork/pivot fork

Hi folks, is there any trick in reinstalling the shift fork/pivot fork? Want to take plate off to inspect . I presumed I put car in neutral before removing.

On reinstalling what's the key to putting back correctly ?

Thanks very much

Mind telling us which year/model transmission you are talking about? It'll help you get an accurate answer.

Sorry about that - it's an 83 SC, 915 transmission.

Are you talking about the TOB release fork? You have to remove the tranny to replace it.

What inspection cover are you referring to? There's not one on the tranny. Are you talking about the shift linkage cover inside the car?

Is this the one your talking about?

When I re-assembled mine I just made sure the gearbox was in neutral.

If it's that one, just put it in neutral and remove it. Be sure to have a new gasket on hand, and clean the mating surfaces of any remaining bits of the old gasket. I don't think you're gonna be able to see anything of value through that opening, but there's no harm in looking, I guess. I wouldn't remove the "finger" piece from the plate. You can see in the picture why not. Those pulled threads showing on the stud ain't pretty!

Sorry just one thing - does the shift rod go between the fork arms?
