Cool How about some engine ident. # help..

Good evening.....or morning....

Perhaps some of you can help me out a bit here.....

From what I've gleamed in just a short time on this forum.... I've absolutely destroyed my car.....

Let me start by saying.....and this is true....

My car was housed in a barn on a farm in Terrell, Texas for 6 years after the death of the former owner.... I did, in fact ... purchase the car from the widow, who had the car at the local Texaco station. The mechanic at Texaco had attempted to get the car running with no success. I was in the process of doing some field work in Tyler, Texas and had passed the car on a daily basis.... Being a "twenty something" white guy I finally stopped and inquired about the vehicle. After some prodding I got the info I needed and offered the widow 2K, for the car in non-running condition.

The widow accepted the offer.... The next day a buddy and I trailered the car into Dallas. Believe it or not.... there were two dead and extremely decomposed rats in the "smugglers compartment"..... Along with several spiders in the engine compartment. The passenger compartment was sealed....and in near pristine condition....no rips in the seats, headliner in tact, visors, etc. The dash had one crack, the original radio had been replaced and the horn had been re-worked to a cheesy button on the bottom of the steering column. The inner door panels were also shot. The body and paint are/were in great condition with the exception of a split door skin at the front left bottom of the drivers side, and one piece of cracked rubber trim running along the bottom passenger side. I've sinced replaced the interior door panels, and they look great....it's just not original...

To make a long story short.... I was an idiot and wanted to get the car running as quick as possible. A former boss had a '71 911 with flared fenders, total RS look, running engine 2.2 liter and 901 tranny.. The 2.4 in my car needed a new MFI pump along with alot of other work.....the 2.4 had been leaking severely...it was a real mess. I'm sure he just wanted to the 2.4 so he could bore that big boy out and slap some bigger cylinders on it...

So what I have now.... for the past 6 years... my how time flies...

Is a '72 911T with a 901 tranny and a 2.2 liter engine....

Can any of you folks help with these identification numbers??
I have the cars original window sticker from the dealership along with the dealer service booklet.... I am the third owner of this car.
I'll be posting some pictures soon.

Here's the numbers...

Chassis: 9112102744
Engine Shroud: 901.106.101.5R
Engine right side below shroud: *6107931

Thanks in advance.... sorry if I seem like a total idiot...

Porsche Crest Number Decoding

Chassis:9112102744
911 = 911 Group from 1970 onward
2 = 1972 Model Year
1 = "T" engine type
0 = Porsche-built Coupe body
2744 = Sequential Number

Engine Shroud: 901.106.101.5R
Inconclusive, really, that's just the shroud number, I think 5R implies the fifth revision to the part (you will see 0R's on the earlier cars, and 930s have a 0R and 4R designation)

Engine right side below shroud: *6107931
6= 6 Cylinders
1 = "T" type engine
0 = 1970 Model Year
7931 = sequential number

For more information check out the 911T registry, located at www.911t.org

I don't think you've DESTROYED the car by swapping for an earlier motor, but the later car did have 15 more horsepower (140 vs. 125) and plastic MFI stacks with integral cold-start drippers. The later gearbox is a 915 type which was capable of handling higher power and torque, but the 901 is perfectly suited to the 2.2 motor.

What you probably want is a KARDEX, which is available from Porsche, which will list the original build date and options for your VIN. From that you could determine the original specifications if you wanted to put things right.

But why bother? Enjoy the heck out of your car, and when the time comes to rebuild the motor, take the opportunity to return to originality or "enhanced originality" with a 2.7. . .
