Hankook rs3 vs Continental Extreme Contact DW

Pelican's,
Does anyone have experience with these two tires? I've been happy with the hankooks since the rs2's and the later 3's but the price is creeping up and I've read good things about the Conti's. I realize I'm not really comparing apples/ apples in that the 'kooks are ~200 treadwear and the Conti's are ~340 treadwear rating. The Continentals are also 3lbs. lighter per tire according to Tire Rack's spec sheet. This for a street car, 964, that is aggressively driven on occasion in SoCal. Would be great if someone who has driven both could offer feedback. Tia.

RS3s are great. No complaints having driven them on the track..aggressively.

I just ordered Contis to eliminate the 7 year old Pirelli.

The Contis are SportContact coded N1/ZR (205/55/16, 225/50/16).

I know I will "love" them ;-))

I got the Continental Extreme Contact DW 205/225/50/16 on 7 and 8 x 16 Fuchs, on my SC.

These are great tires.

Cheers

I have the Contis in 225 and 255/17. They seem to be pretty good, even after some pretty spirited driving this past weekend during the CanAm. They also ride quite a bit better than my previous Dunlop Direzzas.

I have the Conti DW's and also no complaint other than they won't hold the torque.

+1
I traded in Direzzas for Conti DWS. Great improvement!

Spent lots of time on both. For a mostly street car the Contis are more civilized. Quieter, smoother ride, better rain tire with very good grip. The RS-3s are more track oriented and really shine in continuous lapping where they hang in there with excellent dry grip. I prefer the ultimate grip of the RS-3s but my car is fully dual purpose street/track with about equal mileage both places.

All tires are a tradeoff so you gotta really get clear about how you intend to use them and then go shopping. I like both tires a lot.

I've used DW's ( DWS ) for the past 4 tire swaps and recently placed them on my wife's CLK320.

I love them in dry and wet. I had sticky tires prior to but one rain scared the crap out of me and wife on the freeway, Hydro Plane is not a good thing.

He pretty much hits it on the head. From your description of how you drive, I'd lean towards the Conti's.

crutial for the conti choice I guess is, to get the right type.
same as with the pirelli.

the former pirelli P7 was a real sporty tire and I used it as "MO" type (Mercedes Original).
thoase -according to pirelli germany- had stiffer flanks as acquirement by mercedes.
these were eccellent on my SC when cornering hard.

the "new" P7, the "cinturato" is reduced to a all-purpose comfort/eco tire and useless for sporty driving/cornering.

so for the contis, same thing... dont buy a "premium contact"... buy the "sport contact" and look out for the type "N1" and/or "ZR" quotation, as THIS fulfills the Porsche requirements that give the tire the right performance package.

I went from Direzzas to Conti DWs -- the soft sidewall on the Contis make them comfy, and they're quiet with lots of grip and great in the rain, but you lose a bunch of steering feel vs the Direzzas. Direzzas weren't very friendly for daily driving though. I'll be switching to RE11s in a couple weeks and I'll post a followup.

Re: "sport contact", seems like Tire Rack only sells one type: "ExtremeContact"

love my rs3 on the track after a couple laps. imho they are almost too sticky for the street. when i leave my development there is always some gravel on the road and even stone cold they still pick up and kick stones everywhere.

My Targa is running on the Conti DWS tires, and I can't complain. I don't autocross or track this car, so I can't comment on their track performance.

Swapped the DWs for RE11a's, BIG improvement in steering and overall road feel (although less mushy ride means somewhat less comfortable.) I can't comment on tire noise as summertime + no A/C = windows open. Also haven't had the opportunity to drive in heavy rain or take them to the track, but for steering feel alone I'm very happy with the switch. Feels like a go kart again.

Target audiences for each tire are slightly different. It depends.

You might have more objective responses from an "independent" tire review (C&D, R/T, etc.). Reason why; compounds each year are sometimes different, year-to-year comparisons are apples vs oranges.

Very happy with my Conti DWs - but nothing to compare to, the last set was on 7+ years from the PO.

I switched over to Conti DW Extremes from Kumho Ecsta SPT's. What a difference!

Quieter ride due to better tread design. Softer ride due to softer sidewall construction. After the tires set-in, I'll be able to determine how well they grip.

Flo,

Any further word on your experience? Are they as "lovable" as you expected?
