993 for a 911?

thinking about trading in my 72T for a 993. Am I crazy? I like the daily driving of the 993 but the 72 is a great car to own... I'm torn...

Really just my knee jerk on old vs. new.

If money is no object (possibly trading for a lesser valued car ?) and you want a more creature-comfortable, higher tech ride...the 993 is a friggin sweet car. I actually commute daily with a guy who owns a beautiful example.

Then you have a 72 long hood.

You are not alone!!!!!
I have ponded whether to swap my 1973.5T for a more modern 911 many times, especially after the flatbed arrives from a failed CDI unit or coil!!!. I have owned this car for close to 15 years, take the old gal out on weekend drives and have traveled as far as the Florida Keyes from Atlanta, GA on great road trips, but their have been times that I would have preferred driving in a more modern 911 like the 993 or certainly a 1987-88 911 with the G50. This is my fourth Porsche in 35+ years so no regrets going forward with something newer.

The 993 is a wonderful car and I am sure you would have no regrets if you decided to make the trade (yours however, might be worth more in todays market).

Somehow I don't see a huge jump in daily reliability between a well sorted 40 year old car and a 20 year old car of an unknown past.

Maybe you should lease a Boxster and keep the 1972 for the weekends.

Having owned a few 911's of different iterations, I would say no, you are not crazy. Although, I would not recommend swapping a 993 for an early car. They are both great in their own way, but the 993 does not have the same feel as the early car (and visa-versa for that matter). It really depends on what you like. I personally like the feel of the early car over the more refined 993. I also like driving a "slow car" fast, rather than a "fast car" slow (both are fast in a different way). It sounds like you have an appreciation for the way your early car drives. If this is true, I would bet that the 993 will ultimately not fit the bill and an inevitable sale of the 993 will take place within two years. I've experienced this phenomenon myself and have seen it happen to others. Ideally, you should own both, as they are both great cars.

But I know how you feel.
I looked at a 997 Turbo this week. They are good deals due to the rap on the IMS which they don't actually have.

The 993 is a great GT car. It's considerably safer, plus it's more user friendly, capable and competent in nearly every way. It's also built like a tank, and you could use one daily with virtually no hesitation. If these factors would sway you to actually use the car more you're asking the right question.

My main knock against the 993 is that it's too soft, too much GT car and not enough sports car, to really put a smile on my face most of the time. As a weekend car I tend to prefer the relatively raw early cars, though in that roll I tend to want them even rawer.

You've got some seat time in 993s?

Already did that ....

1970 911 E for a 1998 C2S, have put a lot more trouble free miles on the C2S, however you really can't beat a long hood, I miss driving it and seeing it out in the garage.

With the C2S you can add in a few things such as PSS10 suspension, Fister Stage III mufflers and the short shift golden rod kit and it becomes a livelier machine.

Here is the contrast,

Never drove either, but I've actually grown to not like the looks of a 993. Factor it's pig heavy and it's game over for me.

One thing that does appeal to me are the hydraulic rockers. That's the cats meow.

My knee jerk reaction is only trade for a low mileage 993 C4S.

I understand the dilemma. The long hood is old school Porsche. Are you willing to give that away for good? I would hold onto that feeling like grim death, myself, forever.
The 993 is 'new' old school air cooled. Not even close to the same chassis, smell, feel etc. As a DD, of course it's clearly an upgrade and an awesome car, but I wouldn't use the 'T' as a DD anyway, so it's a little apples to orangutans for me.
I've got a modern water pumping Turbo, and my air-cooled for kicks. I love my air cooled, and see it in my garage after I'm pushing up daisies.
JMHO.

I've done it. SC -> 993

The 993 matched my track times on street tires vs. R compound in the SC. And the SC was quite well set up and lightened.

Key on the 993 is an upgraded suspension. It will run circles around any earlier car, all things considered equal.

What I'd do in your case, is just save up for a 993 and keep the T. They are still out there in low 30s with high miles - something that would not scare me too bad.

The main down side of the 993 in my book is the cost of ownership. It is significantly higher than the earlier cars. Brake work on big reds? Rebuild a G50 6 speed, new suspension with coil overs, even just wires, plugs and caps (12 each)? It adds up!

But for me it works - I remember riding my bicycle across the Porsche dealer lot when the 993 was new and drooling over them. It is the eclipse for me. A long hood is cool, but it does not have the "I want to have this one day" allure from my past.

I would lose the old car and get the best and the last of the air cooled cars. Yup, the old long hoods are very raw....like a 67 bug. the 993 is just a very cool Porsche. All this raw business just cracks me up. After I drove my friends 08 Cayman with 300 H.P. on the famous Ortega Hwy, I would take that anytime over the raw.

I second that on the last air cooled car preferably the TT. I've thought about trading in mine for it, I think they are pretty close in price but not quite.

For me the main advantage of the 993 over the '72 for daily driving purposes would be that you wouldn't have to worry about rain and rust.
The main drawback of the 993 would be the complexity that precludes most DIY repairs. And that they go through tires and clutches quickly.

I've owned mid year, SC, and currently drive a 96 993 and a couple of LWB cars. I'd find a way to own both the 993 and the LWB. The 993 is faster, and better handling than any of my other 911's. It's not a pig, in spight of some earlier comments on this thread.

Yes, it's much more well-mannered, and I could stiffen the suspension if I wanted. You can't feel every pebble that makes contact with your tires like the earlier cars, but it is faster in the corners and faster in a straight line. My wife prefers riding in the 993 since it's more comfortable for her, so that has its advantages.

I put a 3.2 in my SC with 7:31 gears and the 993 easily out accelerates that car. My MFI cars have better throttle response than the 993, but they are both way fun when you get on the cam. If you play above 4.5k RPM you will enjoy both a lot.

My 993 is subjected to more weather, since that car is driven to to work more. The LWB cars only come out to play when there is a low probability of rain. I suppose the 71S is faster, but it doesn't feel that way, maybe because the vario-ram yields a wider RPM band of higher torque.

Refined versus Raw. Both are really fun. Own both, then you can match your mood all the time.
