Hi Jim -

I removed my center console, and in the process kept the hazard and rear window defog switch together in their 'carrier', and bolted this under the glove compartment. I had to trim down the plastic piece to just around the switches. Been like this for over a year, I'm real happy with the modification.

Only slight drawback is I can't really see the switches, have to feel for them, and I don't always recall which is which. But I use them so infrequently it's not a problem.

In case you were wondering, the central locking thing I removed completely, and the two climate control switches sit in their carrier right in front of my shifter boot.

Early cars it was over by the key, I think. You'd have to extend the wiring there. On my car I have a "blank" circle between the fog lamp switch and the lighter. Seems like you might could make the existing wiring work there. -J

Thought about in radio delete plate but I like that plain panel. I have an opening to left off heater controls and one between cig lighter and fog lamps...could put them there.

relocate defrost/hazard

I removed center console, have the blank between fog lights also, put hazard switch there, put defrost switch between heater controls and steering wheel.
Behind the vinyl next to the fog lights, there is already a cutout in the dash that would have fit the defrost switch nicely. Would have needed a much smaller hole as the switch comes apart for mounting. There is a post about mounting the switches, using hole saw and electrical knockout. The "easier" way to do this if not pulling the dash, is too pull fresh air blower/ducts. Comes out in less than 10 minutes and provides great access for wiring. I found small plastic a/c control mounting box, I think vintage a/c, and superglued under ashtray. Wires and capillary for a/c are both long enough.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I remember the thread referred to but couldn't find it by searching. Perchance any body have a link? My dash is perfect and just don't want to damage upholstery when I go to drilling into it.

I deleted my console and AC except for the fan. Then I made an L shape bracket with a curved R+L bottom edges out of aluminum (about 3" x 1.5" exposed), covered it with black upholstery fabric after drilling holes for the hazard switch and AC fan. I then attached the bracket to the bottom of the ash tray.

I'd post a picture, but my car is not here.

Did mounting it there interfere with removing ashtray?

No. It's mounted to the bottom of the ashtray. It doesn't replace it, though I did investigate that.
