External Oil Cooling Configuration Guide, here it is!

I've put together a guide for retrofitting external oil cooling systems into all 911 configurations from '65 to '89.

During that period, 4 different themostats were used and many different oil plumbing configurations produced. Some of the original components are $carse or NLA. Retrofitting often means custom engineering and fabrication work.

My interest is to make for easy fitment of my finned oil lines into the full range of cars. The guide ended up providing an excellent overview of the various plumbing / thermostat configuration and should be useful to anyone upgrading their external cooler.

The guide is here: http://www.elephantracing.com/oilhandling/oilcoolingconfigurationguide.htm

I'd welcome feedback on ways to improve / make it more useful.

For you guys with '72s that have been asking, finned oil lines are now available in a type suitable for '72s. Waynes got them available in his catalog now.

In the guide you can see how all years are supported.

Chuck, I think it breaks down what you need to upgrade pretty well but how about some part numbers in there to help track down parts. Do you have any Tech articles in the works for any of the upgrades, or do you think there’s enough info out there already?

Ryan,

Thanks for the feedback. I thought about part numbers for the hoses and such. Problem is there are bunches of them. Same setup, different year -> different hose. My thought is guys like Wayne already have that sorted out.

From the configuration guide you get a good description of the part needed eg. '74 scavenge pump to thermostat hose. That should be plenty of information for a parts supplier.

What do you guys think about that?

Chuck,
It would be extremely helpful if someone had a cross-reference chart showing vehicle and needed hoses, fittings to upgrade. When I went from nothing to a front cooler, I really had to research all the catalogs and other reference books to determine what hoses, fittings and adapter bits I needed. I think a lot of people are put off by the uncertaintly in what's needed. Such a chart would make it fairly easy to create a shopping list.

However, this takes a lot of time to research, verify part nos. and create pics.

I hate going into a project not knowing exactly what I need. I often prioritize my projects by my confidence in what I need and how I can get it. Sell confidence, and I’ll buy.

As for the early cars w/o the oil lines going to the front fender, I think if you had a kit (I’m big on kits) that had the T-stat, fittings, oil lines, & the cooler it would bring in a lot of uncertain people out there. Might be a way to sell more Finned oil lines if they were thrown in the kit too. Maybe different kits for different years?

So, the more info you give me the more I’ll like what you have to offer. I know kits are a pain and that would put you in competition w/ Pelican on those parts so maybe just a list of parts would work better. My .02 anyway.
