Engine not sitting level?
Can anyone give me some insight as to why my engine is not level? I have a 66 911 and the engine, and subsequently my sport muffler is not level left to right. I have replaced the motor mounts and that helped, but still not perfect. Maybe I didn't tighten them correctly? The first time we did it it was worse, but we loosened them and re tightened them. They now appear to be properly snugged up to the car, but still not level. What am I missing? Thanks

merbesfield,
I assume that the engine mounts were put in the same way left and right, same orientation, same number of washers, etc... When I bought my car, it too had an issue with the engine not sitting right. I found that the rear mount bar had pulled the bolts out of the back of the magnesium engine block. I removed the mount bar, drilled and installed inserts in the engine block. This was 20 years ago and I haven't had an issue since.

If you read Wayne's engine rebuild book, one of the chapters shows how to ensure that the mount bar is installed level. It could be that yours is not.

Bolts look good, mounts are installed in same orientation, no uneven washers or spacers. The bar is the flimsy one from early cars so possibly tweaked? But it does not look tweaked. Is there any slop in the mounting holes? The old motor mounts were trashed, they were original. When the new were installed it got much more even, but still not perfectly level. This is a problem with my twin pipe sport muffler. I will have to trim some sheet metal, but I don't want to have to trim different amounts, that would look like crap. I will post some pics when I can get back to the shop.

Assuming your car is level L>R. the motor mounts should be more or less parallel to the ground; so should the rear mount bar, the tops of the carbs on both banks (to name a few reference points) and the muffler. Use a carpenter's level or equiv. and compare those surfaces. If only the muffler is off, is it a recent purchase? Could be the inlet pipes are uneven for some reason, maybe just the tailpipes?. If the surfaces mentioned above are off by the same amount, could be the mount bar needs a closer examination. Bent? It can be adjusted a slight amount by loosening the mounting bolts in the middle. Also check the engine and gearbox mounts (4 total) to make sure they're still intact. Sherwood |
