window switch weirdness on an 83 Cab

Earlier this week my driver window popped off the track when I rolled the window down to get a coffee I had that happen to the passenger side several years ago so I know the drill. I photographed the wiring to the window switches as I disassembled. Repaired the window, tested it by hooking up the driver switch only and all was fine. Then I hooked up the passenger switch (on the driver's door of course) and tested it. The passenger window started to move (I don't know which direction because I was looking at the switch) then it stopped. I checked the fuse, it was fine and the driver's window works fine. I removed all the wires, pulled out my Bentley wiring diagram and hooked the switch up by the book (however, Bently has the red with white stripe on term 2 and red with black stripe on term 1 - the posts I search here and the photos I took are the opposite!) Anyway, hooked up like that, the passenger window will go down ONLY with the passenger door switch. Trying to roll it up has no effect. The driver's door switch will not move the passenger window at all.

It is possible that I had reversed the ground and red wires on terminals 4 and 5 the first time I wired it up (although I'm not sure why the window would have moved at all). Do these switches fail in some way and that is the problem? What can I check? Winter here in Boston area is in full swing so it would be nice to get the passenger window rolled up!

cheers,
Michael

Interesting, I found this drawing at our host: http://www.pelicanparts.com/911/911_Parts/Electrical/911_electrical_82SC_Part4-2.jpg

It shows the red/white on terminal 1 and red/black on terminal 2 like Bentley.

So, as a diagnostic, it looks like if I disconnect terminals 1 and 2 from the driver's side passenger switch, I should be able to control the passenger side window only with the passenger side switch. Is this correct? If so, and the window won't go up, I suppose that indicates a bad switch. And perhaps the driver's side switch is bad too?

Thanks Draco. I had found that post and quite a few others here. The thing I didn't find was how to diagnose the switch itself and if these switches do indeed fail from being mis-wired.

I did the experiment mentioned above - removed the terminal 1 and 2 wires from the driver door passenger window switch - and the passenger switch opens the window but does not close it. When I have some time, I am going to swap the passenger switch with the driver switch. Before I drop $40 a switch I want to make sure that's the problem and how many I need!

cheers,
Michael

I finalized the template yesterday.

Left & Right Wideband AFR, Voltmeter, Left & Right window switch, Engine Push Button and USB for Data Recording.

Tommorow I'm doing a run (going to be around 45 Fahrenheit) to check the visual look with the left AFR hook-up.

The white background will be carbon fiber wrapped.

Cool sorry fr the HI-Jack.

Okay, OP, yeap, you are in the right direction, swap to insure switch is not bad. I suggest OEM switches, the replacement tin coated are not that great.
