Hi idle

86 targa Gerry provided me with photos of the idle adjustment on my 86 targa. When I just checked, my car has a yellow plastic piece in that area as noted in this photo. I'm a novice here, but I think it may be a protective cover???? It moves freely with fingers in both directions. Anyone help me out here? Yesterday my car continuously idled at 2k rpm. Only work done on the engine was a valve adjustment approximately 600 miles ago. Thank you

Pretty new to this myself but that idle adjuster is for fine tuning as I understand it. There are threads on here on how to do it

What is the best method to set idle speed?

That said. I think 2k is a tad high for an adjustment. I'll defer to others here but maybe vacuum leak?

Yes,

That was my second suggestion.

Thanks kynfish. Actually I haven't adjusted anything this far. The car was idling fine until I took it out for a drive yesterday, and after warming up and driving several miles as I came to stop lights, etc. it started consistently idling at 2k. I'm just curious about the yellow plastic piece that seems to be covering that fine adjustment??

It's just a cover. Pull it off

Thanks. I assumed that was the case, but didn't want to screw something up. Thanks lungfish. I think next move is to check for vacuum leak??

I would. Yes. Most people will tell you that first sign of a vacuum leak is if you remove oil cap while running your engine should stumble. My idle usually stumbles for a few seconds then catches itself and becomes steady again.

Yes. I read that on the thread you provided me earlier. I will take a look at that tonight after work. I've of course checked my oil several times and I don't recall noticing a change in the idle, so if there is I think it's minimal. However I wasn't really paying too much attention to the idle at that time. Thank you for your reply. I do appreciate it

OP,

First thing to do is to check to insure idle switch is engaging.

With the engine off, go to the engine compartment and lift up on the cruise control arm, not the cable as to bend the cable. Use you #1 finger and thumb and grab the arm and pull back, you should hear an audible click from the idle switch. Then slowly place back and hear another click as it engages. If this is good.

Next would be to check the vacuum hoses behind he throttle body, particularly the "Y" fitting, follow those to either side to the Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) and the Fuel Dampener (FD, the most likely culprit). Make sure the hoses are intact by using a hand mirror, when you get to the FPR or FD, gently pull and push at the components, if too easy to slip off, use a zip tie to keep them from sliding too easily. If the "J" hose are toast at the FPR or FD, replace them when they crack they will cause a leak and it will cause havoc to the regulation of the fuel.

Final test would be the FUEL PRESSURE. Buy a cheapo FP tester at HF and a foot of 3/8" fuel line hose, use the clamps provided and test for proper pressure at rest and while car is on. Post your findings, we can tell if the FPR and/or Fuel Pump or one way valve is shot. Let's hope for the best that is just an adjustment only issue.

Jim

The Idle switch should be the first thing checked. If the computer doesn't know the throttle body is at idle it won't try to idle.
