I have been looking at the adds for MPD in Panorama for a few months now. Since my SC motor is going to need a rebuild eventually and I would like to go to Webbers, S or GE cams, and aftermarket pistons their iron lined cylinders seem like the ticket.
Wouldnt they be rebuildable like a domestic V8? just line bore and hone and you have a new hole? No more throwing away P/Cs. I talked to them on the phone and they have been using them in Race cars for about 5 years with no problems. I know at least one member has had a hot rod SC built at their shop and he is very happy. He used OE Cylinders though. The cost is high but you only buy them once. I think a P/C set with the iron sleeved cylinders is about the same as a new set of P/Cs from Mahle ~$3K any thoughts? their web site is: www.mpdonline.com |

My take on MPD is a business that is trying to find a new market ie Porsches....
Seems like they have some impressive cnc capabilities. But they havent learned all the porsche idiosyncrasies yet!

hmm .... good point, if this was such a good idea somebody else (Porsche) would have already done it.

I thought SC P&C's were a little over $2K. The Mahles only last 100-200K miles though...

The 3.0L P&Cs are about $3K. They can last about 200K. Do you really need more mileage out of P&Cs than that?
I have never heard of MPD or these new cylinders. I would like to know more though... -Wayne

Just checked out their website. These look interesting:
But I can't imagine how these are different than the original ones? The factory ones are very adjustable. I suppose it would be easier to adjust the timing with these on the fly? -Wayne

Your right I dont need more mileage than 200K. Thing is; if there is a problem you can fix the P for cheap and get a new C for ~$100. They dont have to all be a matched set any more etc. etc....

I do not know their products but (reportedly) they have Mike Bruns working there. Mike is a great fellow and very knowledgeable mechanic. He's well known for his race motors.
Hope that helps

The cast iron liner in a Porsche Cylinder is a pretty old concept.
Many years ago, Competition Engineering offered this product. They used ARIS pistons. (Very good pistons) They could make a 2.8L for a 2.7 case and use 2.7 heads. That's a neat trick in itself. Check out Bruce Andersons discussion of the 2.8L motor and the non interchangeability of the heads. I think that the cast iron liner, porsche cylinder would not be technically too hard to do. You might ask some knowledgeable motor machine shop people that have a little experience with Harley's about this combination. You could also call Competition Engineering about it too! I personally think that their prices for the piston combinations are too high. I really don't see many advantages to using their product also. The cam drive pieces don't seem to have any advantages over the stock units either. Good luck, David Duffield |
