More knowledge about my 911's background
I would like to find out more about it, as the fellow that sold it, said all this blah blah
about client's privacy. Right. Anyhow, all I know is that the original engine was replaced, 'cause in the day they failed. No idea. Please help in any manner, it will be appreciated, as I have no clue how to proceed in the Porsche world. By the way, I am enthralled by the car, it simply is the best, at least in my driving, fun factor, looks, in short, everything. Regards, Alberto |

I'm rubbing my temples like I've seen the Great Ones do on TV but an image of your car and its VIN number just isn't coming to me. Care to give us a hand?

VIN looks like 1972 911s 1.gen. and car was 105th to be manufactured for the year. To check engine, look at the right side of fan housing on the vertical of the engine that supports the housing. You're looking for 7 digit number. There should also be another 7 digit on the crank case ahead of the vertical number placed on a horizontal area of the crank case.
Beautiful 911. And great photo SWIFT!

Alberto, dollar to a doughnut the salesmen you bought the car from has no idea about the history.
My car was like that, this market is so hot they just want to get the car in their possession and then flip it. |

Good point Eli, but I bought mine when the market was relatively flattish 6 years ago, and I agree, he did not have any knowledge as to where the car came from,
or possibly he did as he was a commercial enterprise. |

You can write to the DMV - there is a form you fill out that requests all the previous owners. I did it to confirm that my car was previously owned by Barry Newman, the actor (Vanishing Point).

The engine is a 911/63 Sporto.
The same type was fitted in the 911S Targa 1972 & 1973 car. Your engine (according to the Red book) was fitted to the 73 while your VIN is for 72 (9112310105). The VIN for 73 started with 9113310xxx. Double check your VIN but don't loose sleep over it as the Red book has been wrong many time before.

Based on this info., does it make the car more or less? I assume a non-matching numbers car, is less? The VIN is the correct one, and I was told that these engines suffered warranty problems, but mine being out a Sporto, that does not make it a warranty issue, I think. So, what is the bottom line? How can I find out more about the car? Regards, Alberto |

You can contact Porsche USA
For a Certificate of Authenticity. About $110. Opinions vary on their worth, but it may give you some additional info about the original motor number and options.

Alberto,
When you say "How can I find out more about the car?" do you mean this particular model or your car specifically. If its "specifically" about your car, since you can't Carfax your car showing where your car has been it would be a bit harder. Let us know. Where are you located?

Kind of a genealogical tree. The Porsche factory certificate, I will probably request it, not that I consider it an essential, more of a 'contribution' to the Porsche factory. I have another car that I was very fortunate to acquire its original Italian registration booklet, 12 pages long, and of all places, in Germany. Insane. As I am very lost in the 911 world, except that it is a FANTASTIC car, I need someone so kind to tell me more history, or how to find it, if it were available. Thank you all for the help. Regards, Alberto |

Buongiorno
The reason I was asking for your location is like in the case of the COA that RD911T mentioned below are for car that were delivered in North America. In Ontario, Canada, I was able to get something similar to the Italian registration booklet that you got for your other car. I think that you will need the help of some "insiders". There is a few Pelican that have inside knowledge and hopefully will chime in. If the car came with any paper that would help. Joining your local Porsche Club could help. A pic of your car would also help, you never know it's a small world.
