Keys & Locks
All,
I have been in a 3 year restoration of a 912E (76 911 w/ 914 motor), and have been stuck about what to do with my lack of key for doors and glove box. The only key that I had was a ratty valet key that only worked in the ignition. I am at the 75% mark and reassembling so it was time to get serious about the door locks. I have looked high and low and didn't like what I was seeing regarding cost, etc. My pain guy told me about a 914World member who has a key and lock service. BLUF, I sent the door handles and ratty key to Dan and he had them back to me in a week rekeyed, cleaned serviced for a killer price. I wish all my vendors were this good. If you are in need of key and lock service on your classic Porsche, drop Dan a line. I have NO dog in the hunt, just a satisfied customer and wanted to share info on what was going to be a real PITA..... Here is a link to 914World . 914World.com - The fastest growing online 914 community!

I cannot answer your question directly - but observations about my 1980SC is that the key cut is the same for valet and ignition - the blanks are different. YMMV

Thanks for this - I will add him to my vendor list. When I disassembled my driver's side door handle to tighten That Wretched Screw I went all the way into the springs and plates and wow what a problem that would have been had I not been very careful.
Nicest part is how smoothly a rekeyed and lubed lock set can be. Sometimes I lock and then unlock and lock again it feels so darn good!

I encouraged him to go to Pelican or one of the other great vendors who keep us moving and offer to contract with them to do this service, and collect a finders fee or something like that. The guy does great work has a great reputation on 914 World, and is fast as well as very user friendly.

I have all of my locks in Dan's hands now and he is totally restoring them and making all new keys, valet and master. Rechroming the chrome parts, etc. I know they will be perfect when they return. So far communication has been superb. He knows I am in no rush as my car has not gone to paint yet.

I found his ebay site. The way it works is that you pay $5, send him all of the locks and keys you need re keyed or repaired, tell him what you want done, then he gives you an estimate on the cost. He has to look at the job first before he gives a price, but he has ball park figures in the above OP link. He does refinishing work as well, which doesn't really apply to 911's as much. You can also re key them yourself following Wayne's instructions. Any old school local locksmith should be able to re key all of your locks if you take them out and bring them to them if you don't want to do them yourself.

Just an update, Tweet, who has all of the locks for my Six has seemingly disappeared. No visits to the 914World site since August 14th. I have tried to reach him with emails, PM's, phone calls, all without success. He has, of course, all of my locks for my car. I am quite anxious about this as the ignition lock on a Six is different from other 914's. Just an alert to others who may have parts with Tweet or considering sending him parts. I will update this if he reappears and I get my locks back.
