1979 911 SC Build Date

I've got my 911 SC (US coupe) in the body shop now. Unfortunately before it was taken down to the metal, I didn't think to take a picture of the FMVSS decal in the drivers side door jamb. I really don't feel like ordering an overpriced COA from PCNA that may or may not even have that info.

So, if anybody out here has a close VIN to mine, I would appreciate it if you could let me know what your production date is. My VIN ends with 0962. Thanks!

This is the car as I purchased it:

This is the car at the body shop a few weeks ago:

And before anybody comments on the wheels, I already have a set of 16" Fuchs ready to put on the car when it is done.

Well I thought they were your "paint" wheels anyways...so no comment from me.

Nice car! Are you staying with that color?

Thanks and no, it will be Continental Orange, possibly a custom mix based on that color. I'm not too concerned about it being correct. I've already got a ducktail from Gary Stratton.

My 1979 SC was that color too. It was the only color I could afford. As finances improved I pulled it to bits, fixed rust, and got it painted silver.

Hi Ryan, not to hijack your thread but it might help me figure mine out as well. Mine is 0856. That 106 units before yours so if someone here figures out start of production for the 79MY and approximate units made daily we can probably get the month year figured out. There are a couple of sources here for the repo stickers.

Mine is a ROW so it would not have had that sticker, the COA did not have my build date, just nice to add to the cars history.

Terry,
If I get any info that lets me estimate my build month, I'll let you know. The FMVSS decal only lists year and month, not the day. So far, no luck.

Hi Ryan, yes month/year only which is best we can get I supposed. I know somewhere here I read a decent breakdown of start of production for model year and approximate unites made per day.

I'll try a different search and see if I can find it again.

I think it can be tricky, because if this site is accurate, the last four digits are not unique. Terry, you have the 856th ROW coupe. There is also an 0856 ROW Targa, an 0856 US coupe, and an 0856 US targa: Simon's Porsche 911 SC Site

I don't know enough about their production philosophy - did they make ROW and US cars simultaneously, or maybe more of one type in some months?

(Note the there is a typo in the number of 1979 US Targa's built. I think it should be 1,874 based on the VIN range).

If it is any help, I have the 270th 1979 US Targa, and it was made in August 1978.

Mark

No need to buy the CoA, just call Porsche NA (1-800-PORSCHE) and give them the VIN over the phone. They can give you the same info as the CoA verbally over the phone, often including the build date. I did that on cars I was looking to purchase, they were always happy to help.

Mark I see what you mean. That kind of makes any speculating worthless. Not thinking of it too much I thought the last 4 digits as sequential builds. It is only sequential for body type. Even my number under the kneepad is no help.

Arne2, I'll try that call. I do have the COA and for date and MSRP "Information Not Available" I don't have any notable options and what is listed on the COA is about it unless it should have what is deleted. It is a Euro car so maybe as empty as it is is base model.

Ryan the OP is looking for the door jam sticker which is a US requirement and would be expected after paint. My ROW does not need the Federal Compliance Label.

I'll try next week to reach out to PNA and post here what I find out.

Arne,
Thanks for the info. I'll give PCNA a call on Monday. The FMVSS decal wouldn't normally be a big issue, but the car will be spending two years in the UK after which I will bring it back to the US. It is required for getting through US Customs on the return trip. And while any date might work, I want it to be as accurate as possible.

Ryan

Well that was way too easy - PCNA was a huge help! Now the strange thing is that the car was listed as a Sunday. Anyhow, 01/79 is all I need for the FMVSS decal.

Interesting... Maybe they worked 7 day shifts back then?
