Chasis re-inforcement

Hi,

I am looking to re-inforce my 75 911 Targa S.

If anybody has pics of the "stock" floor / Gear tunnel with the carpet removed (CHasis only) of either a coupe, targa or cabrio - it would help.

It would also be great help to get ideas from those who have done this. Specifically, did anyone used riveting?

Thanks!

No. No rivets, please.

There are quite a few threads on chassis reinforcement if you do some searching.

Hello

Rivets were never used.
Some common reinforcements include seam welding, reinforcing the front and rear strut tower and the torsion tube.
Photos are a quick search away.

Cheers

I'm having a local fabricator look at doing some reinforcement using rectangular tubing under the floors (on the bottom) of my pan.

I have a 'flexi-cab' at the moment....and am also considering a full cage in lieu of the under-floor idea as well....

There was some discussion earlier (do a search) on using some 'targa brackets' between the seat belt points, as well as a harness bar to stiffen things up a bit - those seem like easy adds to get you started.

I feel your 'twist', man!

If you look on the PET you can see the stiffening panels used on the Targa and fitting 964 'Kidney Bowls' is also a great idea. These are very similar to late 911 Kidney bowls but available from Dansk for much less money.

hmmmm, not familiar with that - just did a search - here's what I learned:

"They are a structural member which form a box section with the end of the outer sill, thus providing rigidity and impact strength around the bottom rear corner of the door aperture. This is a critical part of the 911 shell design, hence why Porsche beefed up the design with later model cars to provide a more rigid platform with increasing performance levels."

interesting - have to dig a bit deeper on this. My '76 coupe was chopped to make a cab, but not much thought was given to the remaining structure....this might help a bit, yah?

We have used them, along with quite a few other strengthening panels we have fitted to several Gravel Rally cars we have built and they are very good at tightening up the back end.

Has anyone tried strengthen the center tunnel by rising it and connecting to the rear bump between the seats, at about the same level and the front dash?

This would create a backbone-like structure, and coupled with the sill reinforcements should increase the rigidity, and can be done with sheet metal, not necessarily tubing.

Of course, it will restrict internal space, and the 911 would end up with a ginormous center tunnel as a viper or corvette, would be weird.

Look what I did on the last page post #277
Structural Reinforcement

It actually made a big difference and is easily reversible.
