First, I looked at my head light lens to determine what type they are on my 85 911. They say BOSCH at the bottom and E1 above that,is E1 the kind they are???
Second, I installed a (factory) short shift kit, ball cup bushing and shift rod bushing. This really tightened up the sloppy lever!! Q1)On the front of the shift housing thier is a set screw pin and it's locking nut this threads into the housing and into the front of the shift pivot housing. How tight should I make the set pin? Q2)The ball cup and shift rod bushings do they get greased at all? Q3)1st and 2nd gear need quite a bit of pressure to get them to engage. I have to pull the shift lever toward me pretty hard while jiggling left and right a little to find first gear. 2nd gear I have to pull toward me and back pretty hard. This deosn't feel right. Please lend me you advise!! Thanks in advance!! ------------------ Mully 911 |

1- don't know about the lenses
2- do you realize that the 85 carrera came with a factory short shift kit to begin with? 3- yes, you can lube the bushings w/ white lithium grease 4- hard to shift condition can be shift coupler or linkage adjustment. Check both, if all is well, may have synchros worn. This is common, especially with short shift kit. 5- also try pausing longer between shifts to allow synchros to "catch up" with your short shifter- You DO have to adjust the way you shift now that you have shortened the throw even further! |

Thanks R22tech.
I rebuilt the trans last year and before the s shift instsall 1st and 2nd gear were pretty easy to find. I will try to adjust the shift rod coupler linkage!! Any advise on that?? ------------------ Mully 911 |

Mully,
There is a article in the Pelican Tech article area. It helped me figure out where my shift problems were coming from. You can find the article here http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_shifting_improvements/911_shifting_improvements.htm Rick |

a coupler adjustment would probably help. when you raise the fulcrum point, as with a short shifter, leverage is lessened. normal physics. so don't expect it to be as easy as it was.

Sounds like the shifter is covered here...
E1 is a bureaucratic approval marking that shows up on all kinds of lamp lenses, that includes the H4s on my 911(round) and my 200q20v(rect). ------------------ Charlie Baer '79 Euro 911SC |

Hi there. I'm not a huge fan of short shift kits, because they actually become less precise, and can hurt your transmission.
The sensitivity issue is simple. Imagine if you reduced the throw on your gas pedal to about 1/2 inch, instead of the normal few inches. Yes, you'd have less distance to travel, but your precision would be way off. Installing the short shift kit works the same exact way... -Wayne |

The 85 did not have the full short shifter, and was thus called the factory semi short shifter. It did have the upgraded housing and did have the fulcrum moved up 4mm thus shortening the throws ~10%
The factory short shift option M241 was availale oem on 85 & 86 Carreras and was developed for the 84 SC/RS 954. On this shifter the pivot was raised an additional 8mm thus shortenin the throws another ~15% for a total of ~25% shorter than the 84 and earlier versions. The pin is an adjuster for the amount of damping in the neutral gate, as such sdjust to taste, then lock. ------------------ Bill Verburg My Home Page ![]() ![]() |
