Odd AC/Procooler issue
OK...trying...again, to get my AC to perform now that its hot here in Dallas. Did vacuum, which seems to hold fine, then added a couple of cans of Envirosafe Industrial. I calculate it should take just about 3 but decided to drive a but just to see how it did with 2. Pressures 15-20 on low side, 150 or so on high with engine revved to 2,000 rpm (ballpark) only saw temps in the low/mid 40's. What was odd was I heard a metallic rattle sort of sound coming out of the Procooler! WTH...I hooked up a stethoscope and can her a distinct metalliic whir or rattle in the Procooler. Any idea what that is? I have been toying with taking the propeller out if/when I replace all the hoses so maybe this is the time. Only upgrades are a large condenser with fan in rear wheel well. Next move is to just copy what Ronnie930 did, which seems to work and he's in the same part of Texas.

**free bump**
Could something have entered the Procooler in assembly/installation? Give those guys a call, IIRC they are in your neck of the woods. If I read that right, you are still running old hoses w/R12 (assuming stock system), and you got those vent temps...? If it lasts, I would go out an buy a lottery ticket. FWIW, I have the Procooler and Renn's front condenser - no rattles and am very happy! Cools the cabin like a modern day car would. |

Thanks for the reply....running Envirosafe now but original hoses, for the most part. I don't see how anything could have gotten in there and I think this noise is recent. I may pull it out and put the regular rec/drier in there.

Hey Buck, I remember you from some PMs last year . . . I don't know anything about ProCoolers, but just wanted to mention that if you need any assistance at some point (with system charging or anything of the sort), or want to come by to check out my car's a/c system in person, etc., that would be no problem at all. I'm about 15 miles east of 635/30, so not too overly far from Dallas.

Thanks! I may take you up on that. What has me confused is that considering the things I've done to my AC it should be performing a bit better but I plan to sort of "start from scratch" this summer. This is not rocket science but it appears to be above my level!

The rattle could be a loose component in the can.
Your pressures.... usually we charge by pressures and temperatures. 15-20 low suggest a cold evaporator core, however the 150 high needs to be compared to the outside ambient temp. When charging, try to convert 'cans' to either ounces or grams. Off the cuff, since you are in TX, I'd say you are undercharged, however, ask the supplier of the can to give you a new one that does not rattle before you proceed further. If its a loose component inside you don't want it damaging the TEV or blocking the flow. |
