Question Most roached-out 911 you've ever seen?

I occasionally check in to eBay and here for trends in car prices. 12 years ago, I bought a car off of this list. A 1969 911T. It had no motor, but was 99.9% rust free. Just a tiny bit near the battery box. I paid $4200 for it and now it's restored. Today, I was checking eBay on prices and came across this auction..

Porsche 911 | eBay

At the time of this posting, there were 18 bids nearing $8000! Correct me if I am wrong, but this car is far, far beyond restoration? The wheels are worth money, but the rest is completely destroyed, right? Can a car get any worse without simply turning to dust?

Does mot appear to be 99% rust free....which, in your case, was a good deal.

It's worth what someone will pay for... And to be really cynical, even vin numbers are becoming valuable.

I think the rims are 4.5" 911S rims...worth a fair bit for the SWB restoration guys. Also, VIN number could be valuable for a car that needs a new identity.

I saw a '72 tub go for that much about a year ago. $2k over the asking price. It was in worse shape and it was just the tub.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

Hmm, I could not make out a car in your link.

Perhaps the link is incorrect...

My God!

Wheels are comfort group 14s, worth $500.

It's a car that you pull apart and put in storage for a good 10 years.

I like a little patina in my DD, shouldn't have to worry about where you park it. Wash it and drive! I'd change the gas in the tank first though.

About 20 years ago a 18 year old buddy called me to come look at a 911 he had found for sale. It was obviously a car from Michigan or up in the rust belt. It had no floors except some plywood. I was afraid it was going to break in half and refused a ride. It had rust from every possible spot. More rust that metal. It had a VW 60 HP engine in it. I told him to run far away from it. It was only $1K so he figured he could not go wrong. He ended up dragging the poor thing to the scales and sold it for scrap after he pulled the engine. He sold the engine for $600 so it was not a horrible experience.

Wow, I'm thinking the seller is probably bidding him/herself to make it go up.

Does he also spend his weekends digging holes in his yard and then immediately filling them back in?
