first engine drop,what should i look for?long..
im taking the dive, engine has to come out(1970 911t 2.2t)heavey oil leak in the fornt of the engine(transmision end) along with the the front pulley seal leaking alittle.im also painting the car (red to silver) with the bumpers and duck tail painted already, still need to paint the hood, tub, and doors.back to engine coming out,i havent been under the car since it started leaking tward the front, where is it most likely leaking up in that area? i look but just dont want to be under the car for to long lokking blindly if i can help it.it drips while ideling but pours out under throttle. ive got a print out of the procedure for engine drop, sounds pretty straight forward.the carbs are gonna get new gaskets, gonna replace the valve cover gaskets also. dont have much money so a tennsioner upgrade wont happen at this time. any suggetions while the motor is out would be greatly helpfull, should be able to start on saturday.

It's gonna be a lot easier for you to repair the leaks, if you have a good ID on their location while the engine can still run. For example, many leaks toward the back (front of car) of the engine are really on the TOP of the engine, like the oil thermostat, or the oil cooler, and only appear to be from the bottom or rear sealing areas. Try to clean the entire engine, remove the air cleaners, get a lot of light in there run the engine and look everywhere. If it is leaking like you say, it should be possible to isolate, and then you have a hope of fixing it successfully. Imagine your dismay, if after a complete remove/repair/install cycle, you STILL have the same leaks... ![]()

I"m going to concur with silver. It'll be much easier to find the leak with the engine running. only after you've found the exact seal(s) that are leaking and you can't get to them otherwise, then pull the engine. I'll be pulling mine on saterday to get rid of the rest of the mice's nest that formed in my cooling fins.

Here is a list of things I would replace (this is actually what I have recently done to my car): -rear main seal -oil cooler seals (3) -oil pressure sensor -oil thermostat o-ring -breather gasket -breather hose -pulley seal -valve cover gaskets -oil return tube o-rings -tranny input shaft seal -tranny guide tube o-ring -tranny output shaft seals (2) -shifter shaft seal The total cost of these parts is pretty small but the impact they make is great!! My engine is nice and dry now!!! -Dave |

Fred, I'd suggest to take a lot of pictures of the engine/tranny before and after the drop from all angles. I'm experiencing some difficulties of assembly some bits and pieces after a long rebuilt. Definitely makes a different if I had all the angles covered.

Make sure you disconnect the shift linkage from the transmission.
If you forget, and start lowering the engine, you'll likely damage the transmission. |

thanks for all the tips, dave, good list of what i should replace, just what i had in mind. im gonna trailer the car to work and put it on a lift tomorrow and find out where its leaking. then bring it back home to my house (garage)drop the engine then trailer the car minus the engine back to work where it will be painted.

Look at the removal section of my conversion home page. All of the steps might not apply as the removed engine was a 2.7, but it may help to see the items listed by Dave, and have a check list of sorts. Good luck, and have fun.

IMO the most important thing to look for is volunteers to help out!
Be sure to check marcesq's homepage as you'll find all sorts of great info and helpful hints learned the hardway. Good luck.
