Fire extinguisher install. Some assembly (and welding) required.

So its good I can sorta TIG weld. I was thinking I could just make my own stainless fire extinguisher seat mount, but hey, why re-invent the wheel? So I bought a Brey-Krause mount from our host and went looking for a nice quick-release that would work with my large extingusiher bottle. I ended up buying a slick QR from Scott Drake (purchased through Amazon, Pelican should really carry these!)

I could have just bolted the drake mount to the floor or to the tunnel but decided I had to have the extinguisher up front and on the passenger seat. Problem is the drake mount is longer then the mounting plate on the BK mount, so I decided to weld a plate to it so I could mount the QR:

So far so good, but since the BK bar is made to work with small-bottle extinguishers, its angled up from the floor. So my passenger would have an extinguisher touching the backside of her knees all the time. Not popular with the wife, so I cut up the BK mount and rotated it downwards, then welded it back up.

Used some beefy stainless clamps to hold the bottle and bingo! Nice and tidy, no passenger interference, seat adjusts as normal. Pull the red knob and the bottle is free in a second.

The slope is not slippery; in fact it is entirely frictionless.

Nice work.

Since I can't weld, I just bought a regular Rennline from our host. (Or was it Rennline.com directly when they gave out a discount code?)

nice job. having used rennline and BK in other cars (I have a BK quick release on my RS with a roll bar mount)...

Which is the best mount that won't interfere with the seat movement, works with power seats, and will hold a 2.5lb bottle for a g series?

I think the BK would be fine by itself with a 2.5lb bottle. They make a version for power seats. The Rennline and others also look nice but the BK suited my needs (even though I did have to mod it due to my chosen bottle and QR.)

Evan,

Nice work!!!

I have been looking for a solution to the same problem. I have the same BK bar that I used with the original seats. Since I put the Corbeaus in the car the BK won't work without some modification. And when I was using the BK mount the passengers complained about it.

Now you've got me thinking about different options.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

Thanks Tim! I guess its time for you to bust out the welder! I should offer up a disclaimer which is that the missus hasn't been in the car since I finished mounting everything. So we'll see if I acheive some level of wife approval. I suppose since you had an extinguisher mounted before you've already fielded the wifey's questions about how likely it might be for the car to catch fire...

The BK bar really does angle upwards quite a bit. I figured you guys with the smaller extingushers would have no issues with passenger leg clearance but maybe not? A little cut-rotate-weld work made all the difference, now the bottle sits maybe an inch off the floor. I made sharpie marks on the parts I cut so I would have a reference point, and probably only moved the marks 5 -7mm apart and rewelded. That was enough to effect a big change out on the bottle end. I could have gone a step further and shortened the bar too so the bottle would sit closer to the seat but decided this was OK for now.

I really like the Drake mount, and its dished on the backside for mounting on a harness bar or rollcage, but mounts fine to flat surfaces too. Since I just installed a Wevo shifter I guess mounting it to the tunnel would have been easy, but probably would have made the passenger footwell a bit awkward and cramped.

Quick update 3 years out: been on several drives including a 1000-mile road trip this summer with the wife as a passenger. Not one complaint about the fire extinguisher.

Evan,

I recommended this mount to a fellow member today. I have been using them for a few years. Really like the quick release and it seems to not rattle about like other manufacturer's models.

Well done.

Why didn't you just buy am Element fire extinguisher ( www.elementfire.com ) and throw it in the glove box? No problem for the wife.

Better if your fire extinguisher is solid mounted not in the flimsy glove box.

Each to his own. My FX bottle is probably twice the size of the glovebox model and in case of fire I'll be really happy to have the capacity. Nice to have it securely fastened as well.

As I said, no complaints by the wife, so that test is passed. Not that I was really that concerned.

Anyway, thanks for the compliment, I'm happy with the result!

Just watched Leno's garage demo on this and ordered a couple for Christmas presents. A better and (much) smaller extinguisher. Thanks for the tip!
