European Carrera 3.0 Engine Identification Help
Just checked out a 1978 911SC. The owner says that the owner prior to him put in a 1977 European Carrera 3.0 engine.
These photos are the numbers on the engine. From reading the forum, I was looking for some sort of 930/02 number or something. Can anyone clarify if this is indeed a European Carrera 3.0 liter engine?

It is indeed a 77 engine but the second digit "3" designates a 911/s 165hp-175hp. The Euro 3L Carrera would be a "6" instead of a three. The third digit 7 is the year 1977
That said the engine does match the numbers for the 911 Sportmatic (Euro). The US Sportmatik had engine numbers 6279001-6279113 Last edited by twistoffat; 07-28-2015 at 08:57 PM.. |

a C3 would have an aluminum case w/ a 930 casting # visible from below on either side

Just want to get some additional thoughts on this car in particular.
The lowest the seller will go is 19K. It's a 78 SC that was originally a bronze color. The white coat wasn't done too well and some bubbling/rust from moisture seem to be popping up here and there. Has about 120k miles on the chassis, no idea on the engine. Is this 77 Euro 2.7 worth anything in this car or on its own? |

Rust is like an iceberg. With too many donŽt know, unless you have deep pockets or are mechanically gifted IŽd pass on this on. IŽd rather a 200k car with a history than a rusting 120k with none.

The ROW 2.7 is worth something, just not as much as the 3.0 that should be in there. It's worth a little more than a US 2.7, though. The thing is, it's probably needing a rebuild, so you'd not get a ton of money for it. Maybe a few thousand, I don't know.
Rust in the body means a bare metal re-paint, plus some rust repair. I'd figure $10-15k for that, at a minumum. This car doesn't sound like a great deal. Is it a ROW 911SC? The original color sounds like Tobacco metallic, which is nice if combined with a tan full leather interior. You might want to educate the owner a little bit. He doesn't sound like he knows much about the 911SC and he might be more negotiable if you start explaining some of these problems to him. Too many people see the recent price escalation in the 911 world and assume that their little turd is just as valuable as a nice example. JR Last edited by javadog; 08-02-2015 at 04:37 AM.. |

Thanks for the advice guys. I agree that the owner doesn't seem to know too much of what he has. He wasn't willing to budge on the price, citing other examples (that were original numbers matching) on CL that his car should be relatively close to on price.

I have happened across a motor in quite a state of disrepair...
It is in pieces and the seller said it was a NA 3.0 that has been in his storage for years... Is this a 3.0 Carrera motor? Last edited by mikedsilva; 06-12-2017 at 01:01 PM.. |

Looks like one. Check for the type number 930/02 near the serial number.

Photo shows the 6 bolt crank so that makes it an early 3.0 all right.
